I will be surprised if Stewart Booth misses the event. I believe he has won it 20 or so times. He is the strongest Vic Country player ever, I believe!

Dr Stewart Booth hasn't won or shared the VCCC trophy since 2011. I can recall and I stand to be corrected If I am wrong, that last year he did not even participate in the event!
It would be good to see him back!

Stewart has won, or co-won the tournament 20 times since 1980.

Sadly, he wont be able to make it this year - he is recovering from eye problems.

    Thanks Elliot,

32 entrants and with Stewart Booth and Simon Rutherford not competing, it's a good chance for the sub 2000 rated players to battle it out for a tournament victory.

In Round 1, Geelong player Mio Ristic defeated the higher rated Barbaros Kara, while Chris Charnley from Warnambool held Andrew Wemyss to a draw:

Round 2 wasn't great for the defending co-champs, Khosrou Ghafouri was defeated by Leigh Healey, while Nigel Barrow was unable squeeze any more than a draw against Patrick Cook. Mio Ristic continued his good form, overcoming Reza Daneshvar.

Congratulations to the new Victorian Country Chess Champion - Shumsheer Ghumman!

Round 4 saw some more draws between the leaders, with the exception of Nigel Barrow losing to Leigh Healey - which put Leigh out in front.

Round 5 saw Leigh Healey held to a draw by the top seed Mark Bruere, along with Khosrou Ghafouri climbing back up the leaderboard. In the last game to finish, Shumsheer Ghumman wound up winning a tough struggle against Geoffrey Gill.

This set up an exciting final round, with three players on 4 points, and another five players half a point behind.

Alistair Anderson and Geoffrey Gill were held to draws by lower rated players, while Mark Bruere defeated Barbaros Kara and Mio Ristic topped off a great tournament by defeating Leigh Healey and picking up the Reserves trophy.

The top board struggle between Shumsheer Ghumman and Khosrou Ghafouri was the last game to finish. The game seemed evenly poised, with both players having passed pawns in a bishop and rook endgame. Ghafouri turned down several draw offers, and pushing hard to win sacrificed his bishop to push an outside passed pawn backed up by his rook. It looked like the pawn was unstoppable, but Ghumman found a combination where he offered back the bishop to capture his opponent's rook with check, and cover the passed pawn.

Congratulations to Shum & Mio for having such great tournaments, and commiserations to KG for putting up such a struggle, and also for being a gentleman and sticking around for the presentations to congratulate his opponent.

Thanks to the Geelong Chess Club for hosting the event once again, those who contributed to organizing the event, and to all the participants for making it a keenly fought, but still friendly tournament.
