It has been well known in chess circles for many years that Marcus’ favourite opening was the Grob (1. g4), with which he delighted in ambushing many unsuspecting opponents. As a tribute to Marcus and his quirky opening preference, a prize will be awarded to the player who achieves the highest points total playing the Grob. Also, where players attempt the even more unusual Reverse Grob (1. … g5), they also accrue points towards the Grob prize.

The leaders for the Grob prize at the half way mark are Brodie McClymont on 4 points, Jacob Edwards and Michael Ostapenko on 3.5 points, Tom Maguire, Hughston Parle and Jason Wang on 3 points.

Sincere thanks to all the players for coming, and making it such a special tournament. Thanks also to Shane Mather and his family for their fantastic organisational efforts, as well as to Stephen, Anita, and the Porter family.

Congratulations to this year's winner, IM Brodie McClymont, who reached 8/8 by winning eight Grobs! Tom Maguire picked up his second beanie in as many years, and Khush Patel and Jasper Moss also picked up yellow beanies for winning the rating prize!

He was a man. Take him for all in all.
I shall not look upon his like again.
