MCC Blitz Marathon (Sunday, 11 September)

    MCC Blitz Marathon

‘An event for real chess fanatics!’

When: Sunday 11 September, beginning at 10am

Where: Melbourne Chess Club, 66 Leicester St, Fitzroy 3065

Format: 10 player round robin (hopefully several, based on playing strength - or Swiss, depending on numbers). Each player plays each opponent 6 times (around 54 games in total)

Bonus Points: A bonus point will be awarded to a player who defeats an opponent 6-0 (in what is known as a “Fischer score”).

    Timetable: 9.30am, entries close
    10.00am, round 1
    11.00am, round 2
    12.00 noon, round 3
    1.00pm, lunch break
    1.30pm, round 4
    2.30pm, round 5
    3.30pm, round 6
    4.30pm, round 7
    5.30pm, round 8
    6.30pm, round 9

Time Control: Blitz with increment (3 minutes plus 2 seconds per move)

Prizes: 90% of money collected in entry fees. With a field of 10 MCC members ($200), the prize pool would be as follows: 1st $80, 2nd $50, 3rd $30, 4th $20

Parking: Lots of free parking close to MCC on Sundays.

    Entry Fees: $20 MCC members, $30 non-members

Conduct: Players are expected to play EVERY game of the event. Withdrawals are not permitted due to the style of the event. Withdrawing from a tournament like this gives each of your unplayed opponents 7 points (not just 1) and thus ruins the whole event for all players involved. Anyone who does not play all games will NOT be permitted to play in this event again. This event isn’t for everyone. If you can not handle it, please do not enter.

    Arbiter: FM Grant Szuveges

I am thinking of playing in this. Would it be too much for me given my rating is only around 1200

Thanks for your question, scd. The great thing about this tournament is that you get to play a HUGE amount of games (around 54 games in one day!). This is great to work in your openings and to get a feel for standard positions. You will be exposed to so many different positions (or the same positions) that you are bound to improve just through one tournament! The results for last year's Blitz Marathon were:

    61.5 Michael Baron FM (1st)
    48 Jack Puccini FM (2nd)
    46.5 Sylvester Urban (3rd)
    38.5 Ray Yang (4th)
    37.5 Eamonn O'Molloy
    35.5 Andrew Fletcher
    29 Tony Tosevski
    24 Tanya Kolak
    17 Alistair McCutcheon
    11 Niruruthi Ravichandren
    9 Myiesha Maunders
    4 Barnaby Chiverton

Plenty of balance in this field. However, we are hoping to get even more players this time around.

In an unlikely case that some FMs wake up early enough to play and to drag their sleepy bodies to MCC (extremely unlikely though ) - is it free entry to IMs/FMs who are MCC members?

Can you put me on that list Sylvester? Do you have to pay from before or on the day?

Unfortunately I am definitely ''out''. However, I will pop into the club around 3 pm to say ''hi'' to everyone.

    Hi Nikolaos

Sure, we will put you down. It's fine for you to pay on the day!
