George Trundle Masters 2016

Held from July 9th - 17th.

3 Tournaments ( Masters, Qualifiers and Reserves) each of which is a 10 player round robin. 1 round per day. The top grade is an IM norm tournament (each player needs 6.5 points for a norm).

Reserves Round 1

Lyall vs Hair - (=French Advance 3. ..b6 - An uncommon line starts off quietly before white makes a dubious piece sacrifice. After some inaccuracies white is down an exchange for a pawn and takes the perpetual when he fails to find the best continuation. - Draw

Eade vs Yan - French : Tarrasch, closed - Whites openign mis-step ( 5. Ngf3 allowing c4 ) goes unpunished. After some some sharp tactics and lots of inaccuracies by both players black gives up a rook for a dubious attack. Blacks resigns once the attack runs out of steam. - Eade Win

Punsulan vs Song - French Exchange irregular - Unusual opening - Black ended up a pawn up and started swapping off pieces until both platers had just a Quuen and a rook and Back had 6 vs 5 pawns. However mistakes by black saw white win back two pawn and eventually get a RPP V R winning endgame. - Punsalan Win

Mukkattu v Taylor - Nimzo Indian - White turned and opening lead into a strong attack with a well placed Knight on d6 but this dissipated. Around move 35 both payers were short of time and white was unable to find his best moves. Eventually a draw was agreed when both players reached the time control at 40 moves although the computers says White has in fact a significant advantage at that point. - Draw

Braganza vs Jia - Open Sicilian Pelikan - After a few moves of theory white loses a pawn, comes under a bit of pressure and blunders into a mate on move 22 - Jia wins

Reserves Round 2

Jia vs Eade - Open Sicilian - Black mis-calculated and lost a piece - Jia win

Lyall vs Braganza - Sicilian c3 Nf6 - Black allowed white to push an attack soon after the opening and evntually made a mistake losing an exchange (or a piece depending on how you look at it) and gettign completely tied down. White improved their postion, swapped all the pieces and Queened (twice) - Lyall win

Hair vs Taylor - Closed Sicilian - A fairly even game, draw agreeed just after the time control - Draw

Song vs Mukkattu - Caro-Kann Advance - White got a very nice space advantage early in the game but was perhaps a little agressive swapping down to be a pawn up in a rook vs pawn endgame. A mistake saw the pawn lost and the game became a dead draw - Draw

Yan vs Punsalan - Exchange Slav - The game swapped down to a Queen and 7 pawns each, White made some errors and lost a couple of pawns - Punsalan Win

I had a quick look at Wallis-Solomon (as it looks like Chris has a very good chance for an IM norm in this event) ..and Chris was playing in Solo's style - getting a better endgame and converting the advantage. Re opening: I am going to take a note of Qf3! - good response to early Bf5.

Similar system should be operating for Oceania Zonal 2017.

Wastney unexpectedly starting badly with 0-0-0. Wallis pegged back in Rd3 by instructive pawn endgame technique from Garbett.

Yes, I wish Chris the best of luck. What is the most important in such events is the ability to recover after a bad game. Try to concentrate on positive things - even Carlsen blunders from time to time.

From Vega Ben Hague has half point lead over Bruce Watson, Solo and Gary Lane. Still just about anyone's tournament to win.

Helen Milligan hung a piece en prise for John Duneas, and Hilton Bennett hung a piece of his own for Allen Fan to capture.

IMs Solo and Lane lead the Masters by a point, with two rounds left. Solo handed the now third-placed FM Hague his first loss of the tourney, with tactics involving heavy piece mates dominating the middlegame tactics and finally finishing off the endgame. Lane beat fellow IM Garbett when the latter blundered into what would normally be a simple tactic.

The early leaders in the Masters (Hague) and Qualifiers (Ang) have had a few bad rounds so the final result is wide open with 2 rounds to go. I think Hague has to win last 2 games to get the IM norm so has an uphill battle now.
