Reading old threads it appears that Nick Speck had at least two norms, with some debate about whether his Olympiad norm was worth extra value or not (it seems it wasn't). However these are expired norms now as they were never registered. It doesn't seem he has played FIDE-rated chess since a disappointing result in the 2006 Olympiad, although he was also at some stages very close to 2400.

I have added WIM norms to the list as WIM titles will not be as easy to come by now and two WIM norms were achieved at the Zonal (subject to confirmation).

If anyone knows of any other Australian players active in the last 5 years who have WIM norms let me know; I am not aware of any offhand, as so many have just got the titles direct in past Zonals.

Would the future zonal direct title be count as norm due to the new rating requirement in addition to the score requirement. So we could be seeing FM and CM norms LOL.

Nice question. They won't technically be called norms but the effect will be much the same. I'm not sure at what point FIDE will ask the national federation if they want to apply for the direct title.

    Hi Kevin,

Ingela Bjelobrk (formerly Ingela Eriksson) has a WIM norm.

Thanks, which event or when? Perhaps I've seen it and forgotten. It's not registered, so I want to know whether it's a live one or an expired one.

It was got from one of those norm tournaments in Hungary in about 1994 or 1995 (before she came to Australia). It expired under the old rules and when FIDE decided that norms could no longer expire she got it back. I don't know if its a live one or an expired one.

It would be expired again now then. Any norm prior to mid-2005 that was not registered by 2013 (and hence showing on the FIDE website) is expired unless FIDE change their ruling.

For anyone confused re the different uses of "expired" in the above comments, Narelle is referring to a rule that used to exist in which a norm expired after a certain amount of time per norm (it may have been six years). This would sometimes lead to a scramble in which a player was desperately trying to find ways to get their rating over the line before one of their norms expired causing them to need to get another one. Luckily for a certain Australian IM, in those days FIDE rated ad hoc two-player matches.

For the upcoming Doeberl, is it possible for players to get norms if they play a GM from India, Poland and Australia or is it 3 different federations + your own. Thanks.

What federations the GMs are from is irrelevant. You need to play players from 3 different federations, which can (and usually does) include your own. You can play all GMs from your own country and a bunch of bunnies from wherever and that counts. However the big problem is that for a 9-round event you can't play more than 5 players from your own federation. So anyone getting a norm out of the Doeberl based on the current entry list will very likely be playing most if not all of the OS GMs.
