    Christmas in July (Theme Night) - Friday 29 August

    Can't wait until Christmas? Want to blow off some steam after a gruelling Winter Cup? Keen to try out our club before a big event?

    Come along this Friday to our Christmas in July night! It's a fun opening theme tournament. Details as follows:

    Each round, we will shuffle a list of openings. One opening will be selected and all players must play that opening for that particular round. A new opening will be selected for the following round and so on.

    Time control: 10 minutes a side.

    Starting time: 7 pm

    Entry fee: $10

    Modest prizes will be awarded based on entries. Event details on http://www.facebook.com/GoldCoastChessClub

    21st October: Blitz and Play-Off

    The Gold Coast Chess Club cordially invites you to a great night of chess: play in the Blitz event, and watch the Play-Off to decide the Club Champion between FM Gene Nakauchi and FM Dusan Stojic. (results of Championship here)

    Format of the Blitz:

    Entry fee: $10
    Starting time: 7 pm, but please arrive by 6:45 pm for registration and payment.
    Time control: 3 minutes with 2 seconds per move increment
    Approximate finish time: 9:45 pm
    Prize pool according to entries received.

    Format of Play-Off:

    Starting time: 7 pm
    Two Rapid games of 20 minutes with 10 seconds per move increment
    In the event of a 1-1 tie, two more Blitz games of 5 minutes per move
    In the event of another tie, one Armageddon game - 6 minutes for the White player and 5 minutes for the Black player, with Black having draw odds.

    The event was a lot of fun! All games were played in great spirit, with a competitive yet very relaxed atmosphere. It was great to see many new faces to the club, some playing their first OTB event. Equally pleasing was seeing John Myers (recently coming back to competitive chess) taking part.

    Next Friday(3 February, 7 pm start) is the Allegro! A great chance to warm up before we kick off with our more serious tournaments!

    Second that. Strange that they are the only results not here, although I know Dusan was looking after the Tin Cup all weekend. Still, it would be good to see the results; junior players in particular always enjoy seeing their results online.
