Nigel Short has tweeted that the ETH complaint is also seeking a one-year suspension of Israel. Have not seen the text of the complaint myself yet.

And the reason is..because they already collected money from Saudi Arabia for giving World Blitz and Rapid championships to run...and are supposed to resolve the Israeli visas problem...that Saudis will of course refuse to provide!

It is such a shame that once again the FIDE election has descended into using the commissions as weapons against their opponents.

Interesting comment by Shaun Press on his blog (noting that Shaun is according to his disclaimer "assisting the CleanHands4FIDE ticket in the upcoming election"):

One body Makropoulos doesn't looked to have complained to is the FIDE Electoral Integrity Committee. This was announced in a blaze of publicity in July 2018 in a front page announcement in the FIDE website, and an email to all Federations. However soon after, the FIDE Electoral Commission informed FIDE that such a body was essentially worthless, that the duties were already being carried out by other commissions, and that is formation is not in accordance with current FIDE statutes. This piece of news was not shared as widely (I only found out after contacting the head of the Electoral Commission).

Dvorkovich says he has filed a defamation suit against Makropoulos in Switzerland. So far I've only seen the first page and it's in French, so cannot comment further.

... except to note that Swiss defamation laws are rather strict!

Tarjei Svenson on Twitter has suggested the World Blitz and Rapid may be cancelled because of the Israeli visas issue.

At an ECF Board meeting held on 20th September the ECF Board decided by a clear majority to support the Presidential ticket of Georgios Makropoulos in the FIDE Presidential elections to be held alongside the Chess Olympiad at Batumi on 3rd October. The Board felt it was paramount to support a strong ticket with English participation, and it was apparent that Nigel Short’s campaign had gained little traction. Furthermore, in view of current UK – Russian relations, the Board felt unable to support the candidacy of Arkady Dvorkovich, or anyone connected with it. The board felt this particularly in the light of Mr Dvorkovich’s highly political interview on BBC Hard Talk on 10th September in which he ridiculed Britain’s concerns about Russian involvement in the Salisbury nerve agent attack. Moreover, given the threat of the FIDE Presidency continuing as an adjunct of Russian foreign policy, as it had been under Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the Board felt that abstention was not a responsible option. The Board was of the view that under Mr Makropoulos’ ticket, with Malcolm Pein as Deputy President, FIDE would have a better chance of becoming an independent sports organisation free of political influence.
