Excellent news and congratulations to MCC for the anniversary as well as organising such a great event.
I am sure organisers will take all necessary care to provide comfortable seating arrangements for all.
    Also let me add that the accommodation deal is just S U P E R B !!!

    The eligibility criteria is incorrect.

Rating of at least 2150 on December 2015 ACF list; or
Rating of at least 2250 on December 2015 FIDE list; or
    Current Australian Champion; or
Winner of the previous Australian Major; or
Current State or Territory Champion; or
Nominee of State or Territory; or
An improving junior of sufficient standard.
All foreign players are subject to approval by the ACF. Foreign players, once approved by the ACF, may win prize money but are ineligible for the title of Australian Champion.
Some criteria is missing and a FIDE rating of 2250 does not apply to Australian citizens or permanent residents.

The website should be changed to show the following criteria:

    Automatic Qualification:
An Australian citizen or a person with permanent resident status and has a rating of at least 2150 on December 2015 ACF list; or
    Current Australian Champion; or
Current or immediately previous Australian Junior Champion; or
Current or immediately previous Australian Women's Champion; or
Winner of the previous Australian Major; or
Current State or Territory Champion; or

    Qualification requiring ACF approval:
An Australian citizen or a person with permanent resident status rated under 2150 on the December 2015 ACF list but is deemed by the ACF Council to be of an equivalent level of proficiency; or
An improving junior who is deemed by the ACF Council to be of sufficient standard; or
A nominee of a State or Territory if that State would not otherwise have a person in the Australian Chess Championship; or
Foreign players who have a rating of at least 2250 on the most recent FIDE rating list and who has played at least 20 ACF-rated games in the past two years

Note Foreign players may win prize money but are ineligible for the title of Australian Champion.

A note should also be added that foreign players not meeting these criteria need to apply to the ACF for permission to play. It has been ACF practice for several years to override the By-Laws to allow a few otherwise ineligible foreign players who are useful to norm objectives (such as foreign GMs) to play.

Would it be possible to link/direct to the ACF website for qualification rules to avoid duplication ?

Hey Garrett, how's it going mate?

Initially, I thought on the same line as yours then reconsidering I realised that:

    1) It's a bit unbecoming for the organisers not to have qualification criteria etc on their own website / brochure and

    2) You 'd be surprised by the no. of people/potential participants (particularly of mature age groups) who have no idea
about websites, online info etc. I still believe that now as in a few more years to come old style hard copy brochures
should be necessary to get messages across to certain people!

BTW I am not 100% sure but I think I saw an Australian Championship 2016 flyer during the Sydney Oceania Zonal.

    Aus Champs By-Laws are here:

    http://www.auschess.org.au/constitution/By-law1.txt

It should be noted that the by-laws are typically overridden either to admit specific foreign players or to give the selection committee power to approve any foreign entries it wishes. This is partly because ineligible foreign players are often wanted for norms and partly because 3 (h) in its current form is unworkable since you cannot know til entries have closed whether you might have more than four players covered by 3 (h) wishing to play.

Also rule 5 is customarily used to avoid the bye, although the bye is not at all exceptional.

    I am well thanks Elliot.

You raise some good points about the hard copy stuff.

Good luck to MCC with the tourney, we played a couple of rounds of the MCC cup at Fitzroy town hall one year, a nice historic venue ! (and diagonally across from a pub too if I remember rightly).

    Cheers Garrett.

Wow, accommodation offer has been taken up fast and is running out!

Anyone travelling to Melbourne in January to play in the Championships and wanting to stay at the Uni, had best get in quick.

The generosity of the Australian chess community is becoming apparent with some generous donations towards the prize pool.

More IM's are showing an interest in being part of the commentary team. Of course, we are hoping that these great players will participate.
