    RIP Walter Browne

    Just heard the news.

I never knew him, but I'm guessing some from this forum did personally.
I've never been so broke that I couldn't leave town

I'm trying out a new blog site...

He died straight after completing a chess tournament...and he played quite well there (given his recent results). Great life devoted to chess!

Perhaps you could share a few of your reminiscences about Browne with us Michael? I love it when you tell us those stories about when you used to be a leading chess player.

By coincidence, Paul Keres' very last game was a good defensive win over Browne in the Vancouver tourney he won, and he died in Helsinki on the way home.

Very sad news. I still vividly recall playing against him in a simul in Dunedin. Over 40 years ago! I got to chat briefly to him too as my dad did an interview with him for the ODT. The sub-editor gave it the byline "Swinging image for Chess Master". Then with his long hair he looked like a pop star of the day. R.I.P. Walter Shawn Browne.

There is a great 1 hour long interview of Walter (he was interviewed by Seirawan) available on Yourtube. The interview was recorded in 2014. It is evident from the interview that unfortunately, he was already very sick at the time

GM Walter Browne is not given a chance to get a word in (bar a short response about snooker) for the first seven minutes or so! After that there's no stopping him and indeed he has quite a few interesting things - almost entirely about Bobby Fischer - to say. He has difficulty speaking and as Michael suggests he doesn't look like a picture of health in the interview!

    Moderation notice

I was having much the same thought as Elliott about off-topic posts on this thread.

Posts concerning the issue of general conditions and health issues for ageing professional chess players have been moved to a new thread here:

There was a comprehensive obituary in today's Canberra Times syndicated from the Washington Post so it may also have been in the SMH and Age.

    DJ
...I don't want to go among mad people Alice remarked, "Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: we're all mad here. I am mad. You're mad." "How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice. "You must be," said the Cat ,"or you wouldn't have come here."

Walter Browne - An insightful article by GM Ian Rogers

As usual, Ian has come up with a very interesting story regarding Walter Browne, who died aged 66 late last month at a tournament in Las Vegas.

Browne was more of a professional poker player in recent years - see his Wikipedia entry.
