The June Long Week-Ender on Saturday June 6, Sunday June7 and Monday June 8 is named the Wendy Terry Memorial.

Wendy volunteered years and years of wonderful service to Girls Chess and Women's Chess and her Rookies Junior Club was one of the strongest around. Although afflicted by MS and confined to a wheelchair, she never lost her enthusiasm for promoting chess wherever she went.

After 5 completed rounds of the Wendy Terry Memorial, and with just 2 rounds to go, Gene Nakauchi appears the likely winner, with 5 wins from 5!
The Rating Group A Under 1500 joint leaders are Henry-Slater Jones and Magnus Kellner with 3.5 points each.
Dashiell Young has the outright lead in Rating Group B for players Under 1200 with 2.5 points.

We have all been very saddened throughout the tournament with the almost unbearable news of the passing of one of our most promising Juniors, 17 year old Marcus Porter, in a tragic car accident in the early hours of Saturday morning. Marcus had recently competed in the Under 2000 Tournament in the Doeberl Cup in Canberra and he finished in the placings! His potential appeared to be nearly unlimited. I for one will forever remember Marcus Porter's happy outlook, no matter whether he had just won or just loss his game of chess. He was an opponent I very much looked forward to playing: we would both set up bizarre complications and hope for the best and boy were our games fun to play, win, lose or draw.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Marcus' family and friends at this most difficult time.

As predicted in my last post, Gene Nakauchi did in fact win the 2015 Wendy Terry Memorial with 7 wins from 7 games. His win over Alex Stahnke in R6 clinched the deal:

    11 Nxd5 Qxd5 12 f3 Ba6 13 Be4 Qd7 14 Be3 Rad8 15 Rc1 Nxd4 16 Nxd4 Bxf1 17 Qxf1 Bc5 18 Rc4 f5 19 Bc6 Qd6 20 Bb5 Qe5 21 Qd3 f4

    22 Bf2 Rd5 23 Bc6 Rd6 24 b4 Rxc6 25 Nxc6? Qe1+ 26 Qf1 Bxf2+ 0-1 A nice checkmate Gene!

Besides Gene, Michael Ostapenko (11 years old!) and Magnus Keller had impressive results! Axel Stahnke grabbed Rating Group A and Stephen Harris took out Rating Group B.

Many thanks Mark. Very sad that the event was marred by the tragic and untimely death of Brisbane junior Marcus Porter in a car accident on Friday night which, presumably, prompted the multiple withdrawals indicated above. A very fine result by Gene nonetheless.
