    Chess Related Songs

was lookin' for chess related songs and there are quite a few ...

    http://www.chess.com/article/view/13...h-chess-lyrics

    and many more...

Then I stumbled on this old jewel (definitely not a song but knowing
Dylan's early stuff, it might as well have been one of his "talkin' blues"
with just a bit of guitar strumming and a tad of mouth organ)!

Ha. I was not aware of that Dylan snippet!

Thought there was an old thread about this but might have been the 2003 forum or intermittently on the "What Song [..]" thread.

Anyway, Dragon's two chess-related songs, the well known "April Sun In Cuba" and lesser-known "The Dreaded Moroczy Bind" (which only explicitly references chess in the title) were referenced on the Paul Hewson thread: http://www.chesschat.org/showthread....ut-Paul-Hewson

Another example that used to get mentioned on Aus chess forums a lot was Lazy Susan: Bobby Fischer

In the huge list of chess lyrics in the six pages of comments on that link there were a couple I knew of that were missed:

Elvis Costello: Human Hands - "With the kings and queens of the dance hall craze/ Checkmate in three moves in your heyday"

Suzanne Vega: Knight Moves - "Watch while the queen, in one false move, turns herself into a pawn"

Songs that use the word checkmate would be a large number. These seems to be a reasonable number with Checkmate as the title including one by Jesse McCartney and another by Cypress Hill. The Cypress Hill one has slightly more chess related lyrics with B-Real's verse beginning

Look look punk, every way you get shook
To the pawn, takin out the rook, off of the book

    but that's about it.

Interesting info, didn't know about the Dragon! Vega's verse is great though! very much like chess imitating life or vice versa!

Hex (a duo of Steve Kilbey from The Church and Donnette Thayer from Game Theory) had a song called "Monarch" with the unlikely "Queen to knight's pawn three, I'll bet you that it's checkmate." I am not sure which of them was responsible for this lyric. It's the only chess reference I'm aware of in the massive volume of Church-related music.

One would imagine that Bob Dylan, reportedly a chess player himself, would have some more chess related songs apart from "Only a Pawn in their Hands" which is the only(?) one!

    Attachment 2887

A copy of this autographed and claimed as original picture of Bob Dylan is hanging on a wall at a NYC McDonalds (diagonally across the Pen, next to the Post Office. I was told the place was once a popular café where many well known artists - a young Dylan amongst them - performed there for a feed and whatever the passing of the hat provided! Things were better at the Village, however, the opposition was tougher!

Love Minus Zero/No Limit has the lyric "In the ceremonies of the horsemen, even the pawn must hold a grudge" but no other chess content.

Numerous pics of Dylan playing chess here: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/gene...lan-play-chess

They Might Be Giants had a song called "Chess Piece Face". The title character was also referenced in another TMBG song off the same album "Rabid Child".

Jan Toftlund (1949 - 1990) died very young due to way to much alcohol and smoke. In his last year(s) he couldn't remember his all texts and had to use papernotes.

I assume Michael is referring to the musical Chess by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus -- the two Bs from ABBA.
