Speaking of really old chess players, tonight I dropped in on the Edinburgh Chess Club - second oldest chess club in the world - and played a few casual games. Unfortunately I lost one or two so was forced to tell them that the mysterious Australian visitor was non other than the famous FM Michael Baron. Didn't want to ruin my precious rating. I think my thick Russian accent may have just fooled them.
    Still searching for Bobby Fischer....
and fighting against those humourless bureaucrats who are forever lost in the minutiae.

I doubt they believed you, they may still remember your brilliant games from the 1895 Hastings tournament

Ken McGillivray plays at Rooty Hill. He's eight years older than me which will make him about 86. He teaches a chess class at U3A, Penrith.

Wilfred has stopped coming to the Brisbane Club due to ill health, but I've been told he is still playing chess at 102!

I now must visit Brissie sometimes, I would be most happy to call on him if he takes stranger visitors for a game, most unlikely of course. Is he in a nursing home?

He probably wouldn't mind you dropping in for a quick game of chess.

For anyone else who may want to pay him a visit, he is in Villa Maria Centre, which is located on St Paul’s Terrace in Fortitude Valley.

Encouraging to see you taking a break from saving the world re climate warming etc and post even en pasant a chess related piece (what's the world coming to!!) in a chess forum!
What's going on with the Brissy Chess Club? haven't been there since Howie was involved. Still at the Gabba?
It's really sad not to have a regular thread on BCC activities! On the other hand it's great to see the positive outcomes of Stokesy's revolution (*) with the whole State blossoms with chess activities!
In the last 5 years or so I have travelled to QLD to play chess in six occasions, only one of which in Brisbane.
Also, I don't see any news about other clubs, The Gap in particular which must have easily been the
one and only Dada/Surrealist club on the planet awarding leeks for prizes etc . Have they folded?
(*)Not having a dig at Garvinator here who was giving a great fight by himself against all odds! Actually I really respect him
for both as an administrator as well as an official who never suffered fools gladly!

Rumour has it you are a softy as an arbiter!

There is a regular thread on the Brisbane Chess Club here: http://www.chesschat.org/showthread....ts-News/page46. We also have our own website: http://www.brisbanechessclub.org.au/, which is why I don't post weekly results here.

Not sure about your reference to The Gap Chess Club and leeks for prizes, though. Do you mean the Bullwinkle Club - it sounds like something they would do: http://www.clubbullwinkle.com/?

Nop, I know about Bullwinkle CC they play in interclub etc. I am talking about the Gap Chess Club.
When I first joined here there was a discussion regarding their decision not to have their games rated.

I just found out it is also mentioned here (search under T in clubs)`

    https://caq.org.au/clubs/

They also have a rather nice page on another social network (not the "other place")!

Did it cost the owner of the losing Bulwinkle racehorse $5 to have it put down?

I assume it was the prize for the St David's Cup - St David being the patron saint of Wales.

Returning to the thread, Wilfred Richards is now the oldest player listed with a date-of-birth on the ACF Masterlist.
