I did not see any players from Israel - are they invited and permitted? Only a quick look at the flags of the players' countries
Zionism is racism as defined by the UN, Israel by every dirty means available steals land and water, kill Palestinian freedom fighters and civilians, and operates an apartheid system to drive more Palestinians off their land

Israel is not considered as a Mediterranean Country and therefore cannot participate according to the Mediterranean Chess Association and you can find a list of countries at the official website of the Association.

Not considered a Mediterranean country by whom? Israel has 175km of Mediterranean coast, not including Gaza. It appears to be the only country with Mediterranean coast not included in the MCA. I wonder if this is their choice or not?

Apparently not. As the medchess site states "Members are countries which currently take part in the Mediterranean Games." Israel has been generally excluded from the Mediterranean Games for many decades, and although attempts have been made to allow both Israel and Palestine NOCs to join, they have been persistently snowballed and stonewalled.

Actually I stand corrected on this pax, from you and have just found
out that Israel simply just didn't send any players for this event.
There has been some debate (minor) whether Slovenia should be allowed
to participate but the have a really small part connected to the
Mediterranean Sea and thus are included.

Some countries that take part in the Mediterranean Games do not even have any sea borders.

It is not a very serious event anyway, just another open event. Do not think this title means much. One of the countries happens to be represented by someone rated 1400...

For the Mediterranean countries this is considered to be an important event for them. Ok, its not like the Olympiad or Continental Championships, but it has some meaning to it.

Kevin, could you please tell me a country that does not have any sea borders please.

Well, participation of four GMs including Amin Bassem EGY 2638 and Kotronias Vasilios GRE 2533 - a well known chess writer - as well as a no. of IMs makes the tournament quite interesting. Nice to see so many young Greek players (mostly low rated or even unrated) taking the opportunity to play serious chess while holidaying or having their school break in Crete!

BTW I am holidaying in another part of Greece at present, so I won't be able to come over, check it out or even play!

PS nice to see you officiating in yet another international tournament Jamie!

Andorra competed in the 2013 Mediterranean Games. Lovely place apparently.

    Serbia and Macedonia ditto.

Of these only Serbia is shown as a member of the MCA.

I guess the argument with Serbia and Macedonia would be that they were part of a nation with a Mediterranean coastline prior to the breakup of Yugoslavia.

1)its a big open tournament with even unrated players participating. Many opens in Greece are way stronger than this event. 2) some countries are represented by players who are nowhere near the national team, Bosnia and Slovenia for instance.
In any case, hope the event runs smoothly. Enjoy your time in Greece!
