    Surrounded by knights

Can a king become completely surrounded by knights in a constructed game? This funny little problem gave me some amusement. You can consider it chess art or chess maniac or chess construction or fantasy chess. Enjoy!

With other pieces there are obvious problems because the king will be in check. Instead I tried to create a pattern with a similar idea. For the pawns, only 2 pawns are missing because they would give check.

I preferred to put the black king in the corner, to let the 8-queens problem shine. It would have been possible to put the black king on d4, for instance with black knights on d5 and f4.

The whole thing can be viewed from a PGN file. Just copy the following text, and save it as "8Knights.pgn". There are many free PGN viewers around:

Chess well played is imagination, calculation, observation, experience and memorization in order of importance.

This reminded me of the fairly well known iron cage of Tamerlane puzzle, in which a king is surrounded by 8 pawns, and wishes it wasn't.

For surrounded-by-queens an option might be putting eight of them at knight moves.

Yes I think that would be an improvement (more consistent with the original idea).
