    Hi

We would really appreciate support for the tournament from people out of town. The sponsor has put up 50% of the prize money and if we can see a positive turnout this time then next year the prizemony may well be significantly more. We have a number of up and coming local juniors playing and would be great experience for them if we could have some juniors from out of town and adults as well. it is a great venue at Harrup Park Country Club with a variety of food available from sit down meals to just simple toasted sandwiches, you can relax between rounds, play the pokies if you wish or just take a walk around the park complex which encompasses 6 cricket fields.

We currently have around 10 confirmed players and if can get abover 20 we will increase prizemoney. If you are looking for budget accomodation please email me at mackaychessclub@yahoo.com.au
and let me know as I am seeing how many rooms I can negotiate with a local motel at a discount rate. Someone from teh club can pick you up from the airport if you are flying and drop you to where you are staying or to the tournament if you fly in on the Saturday morning.

This is the first Mackay Open since the passing of long time club stalwart Stan Long Hong and I am sure Stan would have loved to have seen a good field of players. This is our second tournament for the year with the first being the memorial tournament for Stan in February. Going forward I think we will just have one each year and make it a big one,- renaming it the Stan Long Memorial Mackay Open.

Hope to see you in Mackay

    Hi all

Update on Mackay Open - we currently have at least one player ranked over 2000 confirmed and another considering, another 4 ranked in the 1500 - 1700 bracket coming as well plus a number between 1000 and 1500 and a few lower and unranked but promising players who will start to rise in the ranks quickly when they do get an initial ranking.

Current numbers are 15 - if we get to 20 we will increase all levels of prize money.

We have been able to secure some twin share rooms for $120.00 per night so if you book now you can fly up Sat morning from Brisbane - stay one night and fly back on Sunday night - get a friend and share the twin room. We will pick you up and transport you over the weekend. Details on the CAQ website so why not do something spontaneous and just do it. We do not get many travelling up this way and we do appreciate it when people from the Brisbane area make an effort.

    Regards

    Hi all

Anyone wanting to fly up on Friday night with one of the specials - we can pick you up from the airport and drop you back whenever. There are still two nights free twin share motel accommodation available- would prefer two players to take this up. First in gets this free accommodation but apart from that there are still rooms available for $115.00 per night twin share.
So do something spontaneous and just do it. Currently numbers are sitting at 16.

    Hope to see you there.

    Hi again

We have had some takers on the accommodation so unfortunately it is no longer available but if anyone does still want to come and need transport around while here please email me at mackaychessclub@yahoo.com.au

    Current numbers are 19

Next year we hope to have just the one tournament and if we can it will be in February.

    Regards

    Dale

The 2014 MACKAY OPEN has been run and won by the long odds on favourite, current Queensland Chess Champion Brodie McClymont, with a picket fence score of 6 out of 6! He defeated local junior Will Orrah, local top junior Daniel Noack, Townsville President Lee Whalley, Sydney 2014 International Challengers winner Tony Weller, Queensland President Mark Stokes and the improving Brendan Pierotti!
Tony Weller took outright 2nd with 5points. Mark Stokes was equal 3rd with 4point with Brendan Pierotti.
    18 players took part.

Of the locals, Daniel Noack and Cole De Gitt did well, scoring 3.5 out of 6.

It was a fun tournament to play in in a great venue, the Harrup Park Country Club! I am already looking forward to next years 2015 Mackay Open!

Now do not forget the wonderful Gold Coast Open at the end of June! See you there!
