Thanks, Jean. Looking forward to it after a couple of months' break from chess!

Last year, I was fortunate to win the Open with 5.5/7 from FM Kok Siong Teo, Gary Lycett and Kyle Gibson (all 5/7). I had lost positions against all of them and managed to get away with a draw each time! My lucky escape against Kok Siong was in the following position:

    FEN Viewer

With both players short of time and black to move, white threatens Rg8#, but black escapes with ..... 42....Rh6+! 43.Kxh6 Bf8.

    Previous Winners:

    2007 FM Kok Siong Teo
    2008 FM Kok Siong Teo
    2009 IM Guy West
    2010 IM Guy West
    2011 IM Guy West
    2012 IM Guy West

Croydon Open - Round 1 Report

Welcome back to all our regular members and welcome to new players at our club!

As usual, for those of us who haven't played for a while, the first round was an opportunity to clear out some rust and and get the gears moving. So a few nice combinations missed the playing board and were only found on the analysis board. However, overall, there were few problems for the higher rated players and all games went with rating.

All games with comments are now on our website.

B1: Tanya's wayward queen was quickly and cleverly ensnared by Guy's minor pieces.
B2: Regan's attempts to gain active piece play during the game didn't quite work and resulted in him defending a backward pawn and then giving up material.
B3: Garry's steady approach saw his pieces infiltrate John F's position and dismantle his pawn structure.
B4: Simon had a comfortable return to competitive chess when Pearl gave away the exchange.
B5: Assertive play from Carl saw him take this game, despite tactical errors from both sides.
B6: Cameron took the initiative and, with all his pieces pointing at Timothy's king, he quickly gained material.
B7: John V wasted too many moves in the opening and Jean made the most of her space and time advantage.
B8: Greg played the opening passively with white, but obtained a reasonable position. However, Richard was the recipient of Greg's largesse when he left a pawn en prise and then allowed a mating net.
B9: Brett seemed to be doing quite well against George, but his attempts to open up the position backfired when his king was exposed to a mating attack.

Croydon Open - Round 2 Report

Lots of king attacks this round. A few sac's as well ....some successful and some less so.....some declined and some just in the notes. Lots of blunders as well for good measure.

All games and comments are now on our website.

B1: When Cameron took up the challenge against the Dragon, Guy was stretched, but probably always in control.

B2: Without pressure on his centre pawns, Ian was able to generate good play against Carl's king.

B3: Garry took a pawn at the expense of weak dark squares and a deficit in development. After he was obliged to castle to the less secure side, Richard's sustained pressure kept him on the defensive until more serious errors occurred.

B4: Jean found it hard to make headway against strong, sustained attacking play from Simon.

B5: With opposite side castling, George's wing attack seemed to be going at least as well as Kerry's, but a miscalculated piece sac' left him a piece down for not much. If the score sheet is accurate, the final position might have had a little more play in it!

B6: Alan played the initial stages of the opening well enough, but didn't establish a secure place place for his king. Later, poor placement of his rook, and then a piece blunder, quickly saw the game go Kyle's way.

B7: An opening trap was missed, but strong attacking play from Tanya saw a quick win, anyway.

B8: Regan's good understanding of opening principles, combined with some basic errors from his opponent, allowed him to dominate this game.

B9: Purposeful play from John F gained him a straightforward win.

B10: Brett's attacking play found Pearl reeling early. However, assisted by an error or two from her opponent she was able to recover.

    Croydon Open 2014 - Round 3 Report

All the top seeds struggled. Simon, who seems to be playing well above his rating, held Guy to a draw. Ian seemed to be having an easy game early on, but a few poor choices gave Richard the opportunity for some strong attacking play. Kerry got into trouble against Kyle, but managed to fight out a draw.

All Round 3 games and comments are now on our website.

B1: Simon opened the g-file early on, but Guy wasn't perturbed about castling king-side. Guy dealt comfortably with any threats to his king, but his attempts to break through in the centre and queen-side were well stymied by Simon. Despite some risky play by Guy in the ending, the position remained blocked. Great effort by Simon!

B2: Ian gained central pressure and freer piece play from the opening. When Richard tried to free his pieces, Ian won a pawn, and shortly thereafter a second. A pawn was given back, unnecessarily, in return for some king safety. Assertive play from Richard kept him well in the game until Ian got his central pawn mass moving.

B3: Kyle had strong pressure the whole game, but couldn't quite find the knock-out blow against Kerry's cool defensive play.

B4: Garry's anaconda-like grip on the position eventually cracked George's passive defence. The resulting rook ending was not clear cut and active play may well have saved it.

B5: Carl gave away a pawn in the opening, but quickly activated his pieces to gain sufficient compensation. Tanya focused on exchanging pieces and got to a double rook ending with equal material. The resulting endgame was a draw, but the final position wasn't....woops!

B6: Although he had the beginnings of a king-side attack, Cameron struggled to break through. Pearl missed good chances to counter-attack and allowed Cam time to re-organise his pieces. A pawn blunder sealed Pearl's fate.

B7: Jean was a little off her game. She allowed John to dominate the dark squares around her king and also handed him a protected, passed pawn. When she did find counter-play a complex tactical skirmish lead to a B v N ending with the knight dominant and holding an extra pawn. A good drawing chance was missed before a pawn blunder cemented the loss.

    B8:
Alan found a tactic to win significant material early, but Greg fought through to the endgame.

    B9:
Timothy's stronger tactical play helped him achieve a comfortable win.
