A general reminder that some players may qualify for the NZ Championship without necessarily meeting the rating criteria, which are 2000+ NZCF standard rating, or 2100+ FIDE rating. The highest placed New Zealand player in each of the following tournaments in the current year shall also qualify automatically:

New Zealand Junior Championship, New Zealand Major Open, North Island Championship and South Island Championship.

Some of these may already qualify on rating, of course - IM Puchen Wang was the highest-placed NZ player at the SI Champs, for example.

With the exception of the 2013 NZ Major Open champion, all automatic qualifiers have already qualified by rating.
They cannot play in the Major Open even if they wanted to since their NZCF ratings are higher than 2100.

Thanks KA. I'm sure I read somewhere that Championship entries closed on Nov 30, so I thought I'd missed the bus.

Thanks jak, but you've gone too far ahead of me. I've since realised that for family reasons it wouldn't work out. (Besides, I'd need to save up first). PS. What do you mean by 'prodigal'?!

LOL it was the mildest form of the expression. (*) Nothing more than "neglectful" or "forgetful" - the one who was away (from the local chess scene) a long time due to having found better and more rewarding conditions elsewhere!

Happy to replace "prodigal" with an adjective of your choice!

    From the NZCF Tournament Regulations:

    2.2.5 Closing Date for Entries
The preliminary closing date for entries shall be 30 November. All entries received by the controlling authority on or after 1 December are late entries and incur a 20% surcharge. Entries shall be accepted until one and a half hours before the scheduled start of the first round.
2.2.6 Circulation of List of Entries
Immediately after the preliminary closing date the controlling authority shall circulate to all entrants, NZCF affiliates and the Council a list of entries received up to that time.
Theoretically, of course... Being kind souls, the dates are put back this year.

Thanks Craig. I remember the days when late entries into the Championship field weren't accepted (admittedly a few decades ago)

A reminder to those that are thinking of entering that you've got until tomorrow, Tuesday 24th December 2013 to enter to avoid 20% late entry penalties for the standard time control tournaments.

Late Entries close by the following deadlines:
    8.30am 2nd January 2014, NZ Rapid Championships
11am 2nd January 2014, NZ Championships & NZ Major Open
    5pm 3rd January 2014, NZ Lightning Championships

Your entry is received and acknowledged when you appear on the player list of the tournament you've entered.
    Check the lists here:

Wondering if Scott Wastney will be defending his title and whether his clubmates, Anthony Ker and Russell Dive will be making the trip north.

Will the NZ Champion be an automatic selection for the Olympiad team to Troms° next year?

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The NZ Champion gets a place in the Open team, yes - provided he (or she) is an outright winner and is eligible to play in the team (someone who is a New Zealand citizen but is registered with FIDE for another country is not eligible for the team, for example, though eligible to win the title).

    Late entries are still welcome!
