Why was it decided that this event would directly clash with the Australian Junior Championships (again)? If the event was held a week later the best girls would be able to play both events if they wished.

I know 2 of the listed players are juniors, some of the names I don't know. How many juniors are listed here?

Three of the current Women's Masters entrants are top Australian girl players, who might otherwise have competed in the open division of the Australian Junior.

Agree with GM Ian. 2 years in a row with a a dates clash is silly.
God exists. Short and to the point.

    Dates Clash

    Hi there,

As far as I am aware, none of the players in the Australian Women's Masters were interested in playing in this year's Australian Junior Chess Championship.

Regardless, I am happy to avoid the clash of dates, if possible, both this year and in the future.

I will ask the MCC, and the field of players, if they mind playing the following week - as suggested by GM Ian Rogers.

    Cheers,

    Gary :-)

    Suggested Changes

    Dear Australian Women's Masters Players,

    Suggested Improvements:

Several important suggestions have been made to us to improve the tournament:
    - 1. Obtain corporate or private sponsorship
    - 2. Use an air-conditioned venue
    - 3. Avoid the clash with the Aus Juniors
    - 4. Extend the event to 9 rounds
    - 5. Attract foreign and titled players

We have listened to the points made and would like to do everything possible to make this tournament the best it can be. Of course we want to consult with those of you who will be playing, and keep you in the loop.

    - 1. We are currently seeking sponsorship which might facilitate making the tournament a WIM-norm event in future.
    - 2. We are working with the MCC Committee to have air-conditioning installed in the premier room used for our event.
    - 3. We have been requested by the AJCC to hold the tournament a week later, and we would like to accommodate this.
    - 4. A title norm tournament would require 9 rounds. Again, we would like to ask if you agree with this change to the format.
    - 5. Additional sponsorship would facilitate us to invite a small number of titled foreign players, and we will pursue this.

    Player Questions:

    1. Are you agreeable to playing two additional rounds (9 round event)? Additional rounds will be on Sat and Sun morning.

    2. Are you agreeable to playing the following week, 20 26 January 2014? The final rounds will coincide with the Australia Day weekend.

Please email me back with your responses over the coming week and we will try to modify the dates and format of the tournament, subject to your approval.

    Many thanks,

    IA Gary Bekker

    Revised Date and Format

Please note, almost all participants have agreed to postpone the tournament by a week and to extend the competition to a 9-round (10 player) event, with the view that it will be a stronger tournament. A number of 2000+ players have been offered a modest appearance fee to join the field.

The tournament will now be held 20 26 January 2014. The ten highest rated applicants will make up the field.

    Many thanks, Gary :-)

    WIM norm tournament

We are very pleased to announce that an anonymous private sponsorship has been secured for the tournament. We are most grateful for the assistance offered.

This has allowed us to approach a number of leading Australian and international WIM and WGM players with direct offers to encourage their participation.

As a result, we are very hopeful that this years event will attract a WIM title tournament field. A number of very strong titled players have already expressed their interest!
