Conduct: Players are expected to play EVERY game of the event. Withdrawals are not permitted due to the style of the event. Withdrawing from a tournament like this gives each of your unplayed opponents 7 points (not just 1) and thus ruins the whole event for all players involved. Anyone who does not play all games will NOT be permitted to play in this event again. This event isnít for everyone. If you can not handle it, please do not enter.

Advice: Get a good night sleep the night before.
    Prepare for your opponents.
Arm yourself with chocolate and caffeine drinks.
Eat a high carb dinner the night before (pasta etc).
Eat a good breakfast (but not too much).
    Donít play blitz between rounds.
Donít get disheartened if you start badly Ė there are 54 games!
This is a marathon, not a sprint!
This is not work, itís a fun chess event Ė enjoy it!

Get your entries in! I will announce this tournament at Allegro tomorrow so I'm expecting quite a few more entries!

This tournament is great for trying out openings, actually - you just play so many games that you can experiment with lines that you still need experience in.

It's round 7 at the MCC Blitz Marathon and I have the bye.

We have 9 players playing - James Morris (IM), Michael Baron (FM), Sylvester Urban, Frank Lekkas, Jack Puccini, Phillip Drew, Goran Ilic, Nicholas Ilic and Ben Frayle. This makes for a 9 round round robin - truly gruelling stuff.

At this stage, with three rounds to play, it looks like Baron is the strong favourite to win. Even though Morris currently has more points, Morris will take a bye in the last round which is potentially worth 7 points for Baron. Baron has played all of the stronger players except for Puccini while Morris has yet to play Lekkas and Urban.

33.5 James Morris (yet to take a bye)
    27.5 Michael Baron
24 Sylvester Urban (yet to take a bye)
    21 Frank Lekkas
    20 Jack Puccini
    13.5 Nicholas Ilic
    11 Goran Ilic
    2.5 Phillip Drew
1 Ben Frayle (yet to take a bye)

Some notable upsets include Ben Frayle drawing against Urban and Nick Ilic playing the match of his life against Drew, winning it 4-2!

I put in a pretty average performance against Lekkas, losing 1.5-4.5, which probably costs me 3rd place - I left my queen on prix in one game. In fact, it's clear the quality of some of the play is diminishing as the marathon starts to take its toll! It will be interesting to see whether Nick Ilic can persevere to win the rating group prize in the bottom half, which he is currently leading!

IM James Morris wins September 2013 Blitz Marathon!

James Morris has won the September 2013 Blitz Marathon!

Morris put in an impressive showing in the critical last rounds, while Baron appeared to have lost some of his earlier energy, dropping a few games. Nick Ilic did very well indeed and took away the rating prize. Final results:

    47.5 James Morris (IM)
    46 Michael Baron (FM)
    33.5 Jack Puccini
    31= Frank Lekkas, Sylvester Urban
    14.5 Nicholas Ilic
    14 Goran Ilic
    12.5 Philip Drew
    2 Ben Frayle

A few people went insane during the marathon, and others now exhibit the compulsive tendency to play chess variants. But we got there. Attached is the final position for two of the players - you'll know what I mean when you see it. The player playing Black requested that I keep his name anonymous
