It was a great night when I went two weeks ago. 4 new players came who hadn't been to a club before. They were strong social players and some had played on the Internet. Some of them bought second hand books, of which there are currently many.

Last week I was at the night Vic Market when there were 50+ people playing chess altogether.

Thanks to everyone who came along to the Novice talk tonight, I enjoyed it and hope you learned something! It was a great turnout. Feel free to join the MCC Facebook page- it's the easiest way to keep in touch. I've uploaded the talk there for anyone interested in taking another look. Hope to see you all soon, and keep an ear out for the start-up of the Novice Allegro on Sundays in the next few weeks!

The NOVICE ALLEGRO will be starting on the first Sunday of 2014, Sunday January 5th. We'll also be unveiling the Novice book-pack and the MCC Novice road-map / study-plan on the day. The Sunday allegro will run every Sunday, is intended / restricted to novice players, will be $10 for members and $15 for non-members, and there will be a free lecture from yours truly after the event on Sunday the 5th. The event itself runs from roughly 2-5pm and it's 5 twenty minute games. Novices themselves can decide whether they want to have prize-money, put the entry fees towards a coach after the event, put it towards book-shop vouchers or whatever. We'll discuss it on the day.

I don't think any of the crowd we expect to play will be interested in playing the Australian Championships in Noble Park, however if you are then you should definitely do that and come to week 2 of the novice allegro- we hope to set up lots of lectures attached to the event.

    Cheers,
    Paul

Just a note to say the Wednesday Novice Night is going really well with around 10 novices enjoying social games every week. If you want some casual games or know someone who does, direct them our way!

The topic is "Think Like a Grandmaster." If the Baron is attending I will include also a segment "Spell like a Grandmaster."

I am busy but you can include a bit of self-reflection instead: ''Age like a Grandmaster''
