    RIP Andrew Saint

Some terrible terrible news has just come in:

Andrew Saint has just died in a car crash on the way back from Doeberl. I just received a call from Anthony Hain who was in the car with him, and Im quite shaken up.

Anthony Hain and Paul Cavezza are ok, Dimitri Partsi is dazed, James Morris is injured and Hannibal Swartz is severely injured.

I will give more news if/when I hear something.

I am very sad to hear this news - I had never met Andrew until today when I shook his hand and congratulated him on winning the Major at the prize giving. From what I have heard he was a lovely guy. RIP. Thinking of the others as well.

Even worse news - Grant has just added in the shoutbox:

[02-04-2013 12:33 AM] Grant Szuveges: Hannibel has also been pronounced dead
[02-04-2013 12:34 AM] Grant Szuveges: James is in a serious condition and has been airlifted to hospital - probably the Alfred Hospital

Appalling news. Only hours before Andrew had won the Major; this was sadly his final win:

I met Andrew a few times over the years. Very friendly guy.

My thoughts are with Andrew's and Hannibal's friends and family and also the others involved in the accident, and their friends and families too. It is especially terrible at this early stage not knowing exactly what is going on. And also Grant who has had the terrible job of having to relay this news to the broader chess community.

This is such a tragedy for Melbourne and for Australian chess. RIP Andrew Saint (just after winning the Doeberl Major!). RIP Hannibal Swartz.

I hope for a full and speedy recovery for IM James Morris and Dimitri Partsi.
Both seems to have a struggle ahead with that many injuries.

Incidentally, didn't both players overlook a trick in Andrew Saint's final game. It seems white can still struggle with 37.Nd6 Bc2+! 38.Kb2! Rxc7 39.Ne8+ Kh6 40.Nxc7 Bxe4 41.Bf1 although he is a pawn behind? Perhaps Black won on time?

So sad that time was not on his side in real life.
Chess well played is imagination, calculation, observation, experience and memorization in order of importance.

    Rest in Peace, lads.

Get well soon James and Dmitri.

The Easter weekend claims more lives on the roads. I was going to drive interstate myself this weekend, but got talked out of it.
So what's your excuse? For running like the devil's chasing you?

See you in another life, brotha.

Here is (in my opinion) a nice win against me by Andrew from 2006. (Andrew as white, me (Peter Ballard) as black). I was especially impressed with how he pushed me back from move 25 onwards.

I believe he was also quite involved in organising SA events in his time here. An all round nice guy, this is so tragic. RIP Andrew.

I am not sure what the story is there. There was a 30 second increment. It is the kind of position where white might conceivably resign incorrectly (indeed if you saw Nd6 intending Ne8+ you would realise that black would not necessarily see ...Bc2+! under pressure.)

It's also possible, for all I know, there could have been some more moves that weren't transmitted.

I haven't known quite what to say, but I have to say something. I grew up in Andrew's era in school chess, and I remember him as PAC's board 1 for quite a while. He was always a figure in the chess scene, but maybe it wasn't until we both joined the Adelaide uni club that we became friends.

I had lost touch with him though, perhaps hadn't seen him since Mt Buller in 2005 - I'm not sure. But living in Canberra, I had decided to play in this year's Doeberl, and on the Friday he came up to me and said hi, and it was just like old times. It turned out we were paired up to play each other in the second round. I went a little wrong early, and he beat me convincingly, mercilessly you might say. After the game, still in the silence of the tournament hall, I whispered "what was that? I thought we were friends!", and he grinned and apologised.. we sat and analysed it afterwards, and he showed me where I went wrong. He of course won his next 5 games, and the tournament.

And the weekend was great - I had told a couple of people that I was struggling a bit in the tournament itself, but had met up with an old friend. We went for lunch on Sunday - Hannibal came too, and he seemed a quiet but really nice person - Andrew took us to the national library cafe.. despite living here, I'd never been, but he was pretty discerning with his food and the location. It was just a mild, sunny day.

And I watched him win the tournament. As I left on Monday afternoon, I interrupted him to say one final congratulations and goodbye, and he juggled his trophy, ipad, and something else and shook my hand. We had agreed to meet up when I next found myself in Melbourne. He said he knew some good restaurants.

People have mentioned his sense of humour, and some of his jokes just that weekend make me smile. And I remember in the early early days he told me that his rival school St Peters' Latin motto translated as "born to rule", and he put it with such conviction that I didn't know if I should believe him or not.

I keep thinking of Alex and their father, and the others in the van. It is so shocking.

    Paul
