He's on a roll with victories at the Gashimov Memorial at Shamkir, Azerbaijan (7/9, 2-point victory margin, performance ~2990). At time of writing, Carlsen had a big plus against MVL in the last round of the Grenke Chess Classic in several German cities, and a win would give him 7.5/9, +6, 1.5. margin, and ~3000 performance.

[Edit: Carlsen did win this game; some deft tactics such as 33.Bd5 to hold on to his extra P and go into a winning Q endgame. Unlike some of his other games where he sacrificed a P for subtle but strong compensation, this time he was the one taking the P and neutralizing enemy compensation.]

If Carlsen can keep this up, he could get close to 2900 this year.

Live rating of 2881.7 now, so within a whisker of his highest published rating (2882 in 2014), but still a bit short of his highest live rating (2889.2, also in 2014).

Doesn't look like he will have any problem passing that. The latest tournaments show a diversification in style. Previously he was famed as a super-technician, but now he is outplaying the best players in strategically sharp Sicilians where he must play dynamically to compensate for static weakenesses.
