Yes. Lately he has not been performing like a world champion. Wesley So ahead of him in last tournament.

You mean Tata Steel 2017? So won the tournament but is still behind when it comes to rating.

Yes. My bad. It wasn't a great tournament for Magnus.

Well, he is, really, given that all world champions didn't always win a tournament they entered. In Karpov's heyday, he was thought to be exceptional as a world champ precisely because he did win so many tournaments.

Very good point. Most world champions, indeed, only won some of the tournaments they played in during most years they were champion.

Kasparov's winning %ages and margins are probably even greater. And what about Capa who has not lost a single game in several years? Its truly hard to compare the Greats from different Eras.

    I don't believe he's lost a game since 1942!

Lol....good pick up! Capablanca went undefeated for 8 years and 40 days, from 1916 to 1924.

I wonder how confident the people predicting 2900+ (in some cases a big +) are now.

Not. I now think his high to date is as high as he'll ever go.

Carlsen is fortunate that there are no other greats currently playing. For example in Lasker's day there was Capablanka, Marshall, Alekhine and Rubinstein.

Live rating of 2864, the highest it's been for 4 years.
