    Well, he is, really, given that all world champions didn't always win a tournament they entered. In Karpov's heyday, he was thought to be exceptional as a world champ precisely because he did win so many tournaments.

    Very good point. Most world champions, indeed, only won some of the tournaments they played in during most years they were champion.

    Kasparov's winning %ages and margins are probably even greater. And what about Capa who has not lost a single game in several years? Its truly hard to compare the Greats from different Eras.
