lol, I never thought of that! I always thought it was Ari's stare as in the pic below where he (left) and his mate Max are trying to jokingly outstare eachother before one of their epic battles!

Melbourne Chess Club is a very old club with a lot of history and at my age you start reflecting on your place in the long term scheme of things. I think it might be only 11 wins, but anyway, it puts me one ahead of Frank Crowl.

After my blunderful efforts in the playoff match last year I played a cautious opening against Laurent with White, but achieved a comfortable position and a 10 minute time advantage, so he accepted my draw offer.

Now I am retiring from chess until I get my opening repertoire sorted out and get my enthusiasm back. You can't play on level terms with Australia's top players these days without being very theoretically prepared, confident and motivated. I expect it will be about a years break.

Many thanks to Laurent for agreeing to play the game early so I could fly to Qld to attend the wedding of my old mate Damian Norris.
Congratulations, Guy and enjoy your break. You have earned it.

Ari Dale's excellent showing has been mentioned, and another young gun, Jack Puccini's. performance is also notable. Good follow-up to doing well in the SIO.

I would also like to add my (belated) congratulations to Guy!

11 titles is a testament to the longevity of his stay at the summit of Australian chess.

I'm very glad both that he got the record, and also that I (luckily) wasn't on the receiving end of it last year!
