Congratulations to IM Guy West for winning the Melbourne Chess Club Championship for a 12th time (I think)!
He played Laurent Michaille today & drew, leaving him 1.5 points clear of his nearest rival, with an unassailable lead!
    Well done Guy!

    Thanks, Kerry.

I was quite keyed up before the game as it meant a lot to me to win the Championship one more time and set the record. Melbourne Chess Club is a very old club with a lot of history and at my age you start reflecting on your place in the long term scheme of things. I think it might be only 11 wins, but anyway, it puts me one ahead of Frank Crowl.

After my blunderful efforts in the playoff match last year I played a cautious opening against Laurent with White, but achieved a comfortable position and a 10 minute time advantage, so he accepted my draw offer.

Now I am retiring from chess until I get my opening repertoire sorted out and get my enthusiasm back. You can't play on level terms with Australia's top players these days without being very theoretically prepared, confident and motivated. I expect it will be about a years break.

Many thanks to Laurent for agreeing to play the game early so I could fly to Qld to attend the wedding of my old mate Damian Norris.

Congratulations to Guy on achieving 11 Melbourne Club Championships!

It has taken 60 years to beat Frank Crowl's record of 10, so it's a feat that's not likely to be overtaken for some time!

And besides, I'm sure Guy has a few more to come!

Well we all know that Guy avoids main lines in the opening because he feels he doesn't know them as well as he would like to.... Thus arguably not getting the strongest possible positions out of the opening... But nonetheless, he still outright wins what I'm pretty sure is the strongest club tournament in the Victorian calendar year.... Now he's going to take a year off to do opening prep? Scary.....

Congratulations Guy, on not only the victory, but also on the outright record for MCC championship victories....
