    Prize list for the tournament:

    1st: $500
    2nd: $200
    3rd: $150
    Rating group A (U2000 FIDE): $100
    Rating group B (U1800 FIDE): $100

Also as there are a number of postponed games for this round, I will delay posting the round 8 draw until after Easter (most likely Wednesday 3), by which most of the remaining games should have been played.

When I was arbiter for MCC events I had a great deal of grief from players wanting the draw up early. I compromised as best I could but in the end, I found a half way house. I announced that the draw would be up at a certain time and that all unplayed games would count as half point byes as per the FIDE rules. While this isn't necessarily the best measure, it certainly prevents the arbiter copping flak from people complaining (sometimes pretty heatedly) about:

    a) the lateness of the pairings (they are there when they said they would be)
    b) how correct the pairings are (they are correct for when they were paired)
    c) the validity of allowing byes (MCC policy)
    d) the validity of allowing byes to be played after pairing a round (MCC policy)

Arbiters have a tough job, and players often don't help (this is not a dig at Guy West, who is perfectly within his rights to question this decision, but generally about certain players who gave me grief when I was an arbiter at MCC). As long as the arbiter is consistent and does what he says he's going to do, then he has my support

ps. Kerry, I had live game withdrawal last night

Obviously with the events of the last week, there has been some delay in publishing the pairings.
These are most definitely provisional pairings & it is understandable if players would like to request a postponement of their game, so if I or someone else contacts players about postponing games, please try to be as understanding as possible in the circumstances.
There are still a few unplayed games from round 7 that have been assumed as draws for pairing purposes, but these are do not effect that top boards.

There have been a few players who are unable to play tonight.
Those that do not have games as a result have been contacted.
There has also been another pairing that has been re-paired.

    14 Voon, Richard 1924 1859 [2.5] : Kolak, Tanya 1451 1217 [2]

    5 Rujevic, Mirko 2253 2277 [4] +:- Beaumont, David 2095 2057 [4.5]
what does this +:- exactly mean?

Is it because David Firegoat announced over zochat that he is not playing anymore? Did he inform the arbiter in the correct manner?

It just means he forfeited the game, presumably by not turning up.

but on what basis was it forfeited, coz we know on zochat that he did turn up but was notified by Kezza that the game was cancelled?.

Did Kezza have the authority to cancel the game on only a BB posting? Does that abide by the rules?

Was FG trying to save his pound of flesh by not be barred for a year like that poor gezza in Qld was by GG was it, and it was broadcast forever on front page of their bulletin.

Wouldn't it have been on the basis that he communicated to the arbiter that he wasn't going to play and intended to forfeit? A bulletin board is one way of doing that, if you know that the arbiter is going to see it. Obviously Kerry did.

Under those circumstances the arbiter is obliged out of courtesy to the opponent to let them them know that they needn't turn up. Otherwise Rujevic has to waste half an evening turning up to a game that the other player has already said he is not going to play.

It was nice of David to inform the arbiter that he intended to forfeit rather than rudely just not show up, so as to allow Mirko to make other plans, such as dinner and dancing.

David did show up, so perhaps he changed his mind, but not in time to reverse the cancellation.

It seems, understandably, as if it was a somewhat subdued round. It was heartening to see Anthony Hain playing
