Very murky game and all credit to the winner. To the limited extent I can make any sense of it even with Fritz assistance, it seems white's plan setting up 0-0 may have been too orthodox and slow and that the white K actually belongs on d2, then later on white makes some little mistakes and black gets too much activity.

A few years ago firegoat and I kept having the same rating and were only points ahead or behind each other on pretty much every list. But lately he's picked up and started playing really well. I see he has another easy one tomorrow.

He has always been able to play really well at his best, but he has always been rather inconsistent too.

I think (like all people who started chess as adults) he is one of those people who simply needs to play a lot of chess to find his best form.

He is playing heaps and heaps of chess at the moment (more than he has ever played before) and by doing so he is working himself into form.

Note that Ari Dale has been doing the same thing for the past year and it seems to be working for him too.

People always used to say that the best way to address a form slump was to take a break from chess, but Ari Dale and David Beaumont have taken a totally different approach (playing a lot more and exercising their way out of the form slump) and it seems to be working for them!

What we could have here is a totally new approach to training and dealing with the question of form.... Ive very interested to see where all of this leads.

Interesting results. Hope that what amounts to an unintentional Swiss Gambit works out for Max. Congratulations to Firegoat on that big win.

    Thanks you very much Michael.

I dedicate my performance in this tournament to the memory of one of the greatest club members and selfless junior coaches, Peter Caissa, who sadly passed away about a week ago. His funeral was on the Friday morning of the Christmas Swiss. Those from the chess community in attendance learnt that this kind and generous man also had a strong interest in biking and Buddhism.

Hobsons Bay/Yarraville chess club has lost a founding member - henceforth our club championships will be known as the Peter Caissa Cup.

    RIP Caissa, God of Chess!

Congrats to Tony & all the other winners. Great to see Max and Zong Yuan at the club. I'll try to put some games up if I can find any scoresheets at the club tomorrow.

    Paul

ps. I can't help but wonder what would've happened if the goat didn't take a fire-bye after his round 3 win!
