Australia was more or less certain to qualify for this as we only had to top Oceania Zone to do so. As with a lot of these things, with the notice so short, if anyone can rustle up an eligible and even semi-decent team in time it's highly likely they'd be endorsed by the ACF. We've fielded teams in some of the Asian cities type events on a similar basis.

At the time of writing myself, Giang, Emma and Arianne are interested in playing this tournament. Giang is the main person organising a possible team at the moment so if you are interested in representing Australia then it's probably best to express your interest to her. The deadline for registering Australia is October 31, and November 15 is the deadline for submitting the players.

My understanding of the tournament regulations is that the accommodation will be paid for by the organisers, but the team members will have to pay for their air fares. The minimum amount of money the team would receive is $2500 (if the team is eliminated in the round robin section, where Australia would play Germany, Cuba and Latvia).

    Interested if needed

    Hi,

If needed I am living in London at the moment, so happy to fly over and play if you need an extra person, if I meet the minimum standard's. (from Sydney)

    Name: Christopher Skulte
    FIDE Rating: 1969
Playing in longer time controls before moving over here from Australia, I was starting to improve quite a bit, and getting a close scalp or 2.

Anyway happy regardless, goodluck to the team, but if you do need another, I would be very keen, contact me: chrisskulte@gmail.com

    Thanks

    Christopher Skulte

In the past there has usually been a requirement that all players be from the same city except for one permitted ring-in. I can't find that on the regulations this time around - making me suspect it may not exist for this event - but those interested in playing might want to check with the organisers. Or just register themselves as all from Alice Springs and see if anyone notices.

    Costs

Just FYI for those interested that were going to contact Giang.
Flights from Australia return are looking to cost about $2,500 around that time.

That's simply not true. A 5 second check showed China Southern fares for about $1,700, and there may be cheaper options.

(BTW, shouldn't this thread be changed to World Cities Championship - it is not the World Teams Championship.)

There are some noises about possible applicants, such that there might be more people interested in going than the number of positions available.

On that basis I've sent an email around the Exec and SD to see if we need a competitive selections process; if one is deemed necessary I'll have details up here soon. This would most likely involve expressions of interest being required by late October (I suggested the 25th).

I've had it confirmed that there is no requirement that players be from the same city. Players just have to all be from the same federation and then the team is named after a city.

Players who are definitely interested and available to participate if selected are asked to send an email just stating their interest to all of the following:

    ACF President Gary Wastell gwastell@netspace.net.au

ACF Selections Director Tom Saltmarsh catowi@internode.on.net

ACF FIDE Delegate Kevin Bonham k_bonham@tassie.net.au

advising of their interest by Thursday 25 October. Players who are not more or less certain they will be available are requested not to apply in view of the short time span. Players applying are required to check their email regularly (every few days at least) up until at least mid-November and reply promptly to any requests sent to them.
