Chess Olympiad 2004, Calvia de Mallorca, Spain

    Tomorrow the Olympics begin.

Just thought I would say a good luck to the team and open a thread dedicated to the Australian team and the ongoings at the 2004 Chess Olympiad.

The web page is http://www.36chessolympiad-daily.com....php?idioma=en which works just fine.

Found this article talking about the Olympiad, on http://www.calviafestival.com/noticia.php?ver=18 Thought the English was pretty funny.

    News
    [10/08/2004] 36 Chess Olympiad
From 14th to 31th October 2004 will take place the XXXVI Chess Olympiad in Calvia (Majorca).

Best players of all over the world will come to Calvia, in order to fight for medals.

Spain presents the strongest team in his history, Great Masters Shirov, Vallejo, Illescas and Romero are in the team, so that a great performance is expected ...

The women team is leaded by the balearic WGM Mónica Calzetta. There is no doubt they will be also followed with great passion from the majorcan people.

Well you know what they say - small things... I suppose they think my Spanish is pretty funny too...

It's actually rather good, I thought. The problems are with grammar and a few too-literal word translations, but the meaning remains clear and unambiguous.

His heritage is Latvian, but these days I'm pretty sure he's a Spanish citizen and lives in Spain. He's certainly affiliated with the local chess federation.

More comical are the teams in the European Club Cup.

That reminds me of the sign in English greeting me as I arrived at Sheremetyevo International Airport in 1991:

"If this is your first visit to Russia you are welcome to it."

Yes, I think he played Linares once and had such a 'good' () tournament he decided not to leave.

According to the official site the Masculino start at 15:00 while the Feminino commence at 15:50. As far as I can tell this is 11pm AEST(midnight for me since Tas is already on daylight savings).

There's a link on the official site to "Live Games" through a thing called Playzone - anyone know if this is free?

It is free but I could only get the top 18 Open matches and the top 7 Women's matches. Hopefully either this will improve or else Australia will climb to these lofty tables.

Bit of a disappointment if we can't watch the games live this time - were all games broadcast last time? My memory is that they were, but I'm not certain.
