I had totally forgotten about your chances Guy ... only when Leonid rang me to point out my error did I notice it ... and you have also pointed it out!

I might hold off such bold predictions until round 11 is about to start ...

It was in fact a win for Guy. Tristan pushed for a win in what looked to be a fairly drawn rook ending ... and you know the result ...

    Agreed. Fantastic result.

    Well done, James.

I could have won my pawn up ending against Dom and kept the suspense a little longer, but then again I was busted out of the opening so I guess a draw is fair enough...

Well done James - commanding performance to win the tournament.

How long did his games with Hacche last?

    Congratulations James!

Well done James! Top performance through out the tournament.

By the way 18-years old Morris became the third youngest player in Victorian chess history to win the State Championship.

The first was Bobby Cheng (he won in 2011), the second one was Ian Rogers( he won in 1974?).

James Morris, ad eundum quo nemo ante iit!

James Morris, defied burdens such as strong competition and of course his final year at High School (VCE) studies to add another big one under his belt!

James, here on the way to Kuala Lumpur from the airport in Malaysia last August, looks set for great things to come! As the Latin dictum goes: Ad eundum quo nemo ante iit!

Result of postponed game: Cheng West 0.5 - 0.5

The postponed game Cheng - West was drawn in 80 moves. A very tense game with both players taking big risks to try and win.

I played the Albin Counter Gambit and achieved yet another terrible opening position. After the game Bobby appeared somewhat bemused and said something like, 'But the Albin is no good'. You have to admire the discipline of the young players of today. In my day rubbish openings were our bread and butter. I was raised on a diet of Budapest Gambits, Schliemanns and Vinken attacks.

As an aside, I also think the switch to mostly 1 e4 by James Morris instead of English/Reti/Catalan type systems has made him a more dangerous player, as the sharper positions seem to suit his tactical skills. It's also good to have a broader range of positions you can play so you can tailor your opening to specific opponents, and to have some variety to keep yourself interested.

I don't know if any of the other postponed games have been played yet, but the scores as far as I know them are as follows.

    Out of 10

    8.5 Morris

    7.0 Goldenberg

    6.5 West Dragicevic

    6.0 Sandler

    5.0 (x) Cheng

    4.0 (xx) Zelesco

    4.0 Stojic Levi

    2.5 Garner

    2.0 (x) Stevens

    2.0 Hacche

Not sure about the postponed games, but the final round is on Tuesday night at Box Hill, 7.30 pm.

Cheng beat Zelesco in their postponed game, so any of 5 players are in the running for 2nd place ... plenty to play for on Tuesday night!
