James Morris is having a superb tournament so far with 7.5/8 - well done, James! It's hard to see him being overtaken so the race for second is becoming interesting. There are a few candidates - Goldenberg on 5.5, Sandler and Dragicevic on 5 and then there are a few players with postponed games still to play - West, Cheng , Zelesco.

Was I missing something or wasn't Bobby winning the pawn endgame against James. How did that end up being a draw. Apologies if I am missing something simple.

Also just wondering when is the postponed game between Zelesco and Cheng being played.

Under time pressure Bobby short counted one tempo and thought it was a dead draw.
Karl and Bobby will play their game on Sunday 24th.

Serves you right for spending too much time arguing non chessic topics in the threads! I am back in Melbourne for a few but extremely busy. If I find some time I will e-mail you to meet for a coffee or something!

Has James mathematically sealed the deal yet? Must be getting very close if not.

His worst possible result is now =1st, which requires him to finish with 0/2 & one of the chasing pack to finish with wins to end up on 8/11.

Sportsbet are offering a 2.00 even money bet on Black Caviar to win the Diamond Jubilee, into Usain Bolt to win the Olympic 100 metres. A pretty generous price some might think.

If they had to frame odds on Karise Eden to win The Voice tonight, into James Morris to win the Vic Championship outright, I reckon the odds would be about 1.01 if you were lucky!

In my Goldenberg game above, the final draw offer was at a very interesting point. I was down to my 30 second increment, but Igor also had only 5 minutes left and seemed to be losing the thread. I thought he might still be objectively better or maybe a repetition was coming, but the main thing was that I hoped that a draw offer might make him think longer and thus even up the times a bit. I knew there was a good chance he'd accept despite knocking back a draw earlier, because he'd held a much bigger advantage at that stage, but given the board and time situation I was still happy to save what had appeared to be a hopeless situation a few moves earlier.

As an aside, it is a big mistake for me to allow a closed position against almost anyone, but especially against players like Igor who are good at manoeuvering. Therefore ...Re8 in the opening was bad strategy by me; I should have opened the position with ...exd4 before he got d5 in. A blocked up West is not the best!

I've posted some comments on the endgame here. If that is really all of it then the final position is still apparently winning for Bobby.

Just a minor, pedantic point about the maths of it. He can not only be caught, he can still be overtaken (as at time of posting.)

James will win it, no doubt whatsoever about that after the escape against Bobby, but we shouldn't call it a mathematical certainty until I lose or draw against Tristan tonight. A practical certainty, yes, a mathematical certainty, no!
