    Electronic chess

I am thinking about buying an electronic chess game. I am a beginner and keen to learn but isolated from clubs etc (in Alice Springs!).

    Any recommendations?

also keen to hear about good books for beginners.

    thanks

    Changing your handle

If you wish to change your name from 'Darwin Girl' to 'Alice Girl' send a private message to 'Skip to my lou' (we call him STML for short), he's the owner of the site and ask him for a name change and it shouldn't be a problem.

'Chess Made Easy' by Purdy is a pretty good book (and local).

Also Winning Chess by Beach and Alexander Vols 1 and 2
    is one of my favourite.

    There are many more.

For engines, chessplaying programs, you can get cheeeBase Lite for free and play with an early version of Fritz.
