    Smile Rating estimate

Do any programs e.g. Fritz give an estimate of a player's rating when
    they analyse a game?

I don't think Fritz (11 is the latest version I have) does but since its ratings estimates based on head to head games against it are so woeful I wouldn't take much notice of it if it did.

I believe its possible by comparing the average score of the players move with
    the score the engines move.

For example, say a player played exactly the same as a engine, except every third move the blundered a minor piece for nothing. On average they would be - 1 pawn down each move compared to the engine.

The closer the players scores they are to the engine, the better.

Using a large number of different players, one could estimate average scores of players of different ratings. Later this could use as a basis for estimating a players rating from his game score.
