wasn't another psychological ploy in order to mislead Dusan into false assumptions as you did with Watto and myself who were about to burst into jeers for your supposedly defeatist statements!

Guy, Congratulations on your win vs Dusan, another champion player of the younger generation! The old adage "When the going gets tough, the tough get going" suits your style and determination perfectly!

And for those interested in Chess trivia: Guy West won his first MCC Champion title in 1983, and has won it 10 times since - a record really hard to break!

You are a hard bitten cynic, Elliott.

I was a bit lucky last night, as Dusan had an amazing tactical resource on move 22 that would have forced me to give up my Queen for rook, bishop and pawn and left him with a better game, albeit rather short of time. We both mis-analysed the variation, rejecting it for different reasons.

On the other hand, I could have equalised a couple of times, but chose risky moves to complicate because of the tournament situation. You can't win with risky play without your opponent missing a chance somewhere along the way.

I don't think you can tempt a person like Dusan into false assumptions. Does he even read Chesschat? He would be well aware that anything can happen, and that in a tournament with as much depth as this one it's not over until it's over. I doubt he would have expected to go through the tournament undefeated, although he would have hoped to, as all the top players would.

Saying that if Dusan didn't win the tournament outright he'd tie for first has to be seen in the context that he was in a commanding position at the time, a whole point ahead. I still think the smart money would be on him to win outright, as I haven't played Domagoj yet.

The tournament could also be decided by some dangerous junior like Karl or Ari getting to the top boards in the last round and causing an upset.

In the face of your extraordinary allegations of underplaying my chances, I have at least been defended by my good wife who this morning described me as like a bedraggled rat trying to claw its way out of the gutter.

    Edited spelling...

Thanks, Frank, but I may have used up all my luck.

Is there such a direction as South-North? If so, I think there's a storm coming DUE SN.

It's currently crossing a few Dales and about to pass through Karlton.

As the AFL boys say, let's just take it one week at a time. I have an angry fire eating goat to worry about.
