    ACT Under 8 championships

This is always an interesting tournament with competitors as young as 4. Fortunately I was not involved - it was ably run by our juniors, Tor Lattimore and Shannon Oliver.

I understand one competitor had to be dissuaded from resigning when up about 5 pieces! Also the arrival of the pizza lunch, resulted in some very short games.

Congratulations to under 8 champion, Taiyang Zhang

I'm surprised they'd been taught how to resign! However, with pizza > chess that would always have been expected

I think the conversation with Shannon went something like this.

Child "Libby says I am not allowed to resign, but I want to"
Shannon "Ok - count your big pieces. "
    child "5'
Shannon "now count the other person's big pieces"
    child "2"
Shannon " well that doesn't seem a good idea to resign, does it?"
child "but I don't want to play anymore"

I think the final result was a draw!

There were some really good little players, but by the time you got past the middle of the field, it was all about exposure to competitive chess for the first time.
