As per fide arbiter norm requirements, successfully completing the fide arbiters seminar and exam equals one norm. To get the fide arbiter title, an applicant still needs to obtain three other fide arbiter norms.

    FIDE norm available

A FIDE arbiter norm is available by being arbiter of the Box Hill FIDE rated tournament. More details next week.

Everyone knows - these seminars (just like Fide coaching seminars) were introduced by Fide to raise more funds

If there is a decent exam involved then I think they could be a good idea. But I do wonder how many people are they going to fail. Will the pass mark really be that high that quite a few fail.

It is one of the main issues in relation to tournament arbiting about how much do arbiters really know about the laws of chess since they are never tested on them.

But then you need a decent examiner.

Garvin according to what is written in the Regulations for the Titles of Arbiters, http://www.fide.com/component/handbo...&view=category the pass mark is 80%.

    FIDE arbiter title

If you want to become a FIDE arbiter you have to attend one of these seminars and pass the exam. Melbourne is the most cost effective place for Australian wannabees to get the required norm. The next best place is probably Moscow. An entry fee will be worked out once we get a clear idea what our costs will be.
