This is a bit like the Australian High Court justice who remarked, in a case involving the question whether an Australian sailor could be tried by UK authorities for an offence carrying the death penalty in the UK, that the Court's decision could have grave consequences for the sailor.

I recently read an article that made me proud of Aussie diggers. During WW1 when the Allies wer being wiped out by Johnny Turk many Diggers deserted, Australia being the only country that did enforce the shoot-em-at-dawn dictum. When they were challenged by Poms as to why they were letting their mates down they replied: if their mates had any sense they would be wining, dining, womanising just as they were.

Reminded of that quip, what if they declared a war and nobody came? Was it John Lennon who was a peace campaigner?

Facism and Nazism, which were partly areaction to communism. Yet HItler seen fit to make agreement with the USSR early WW2 and the USSR helped Germany in numerous ways. But eventually both sides true colours came to the fore and exploded.

yes thats correct.

it was originally based on the vietnam war but they found that m.a.s.h. was too successful at capturing the essence of the conflict so the producers tweaked the format to instead encompass the entrepid adventures of a group of new york city friends.

quite a remarkable change from the original pilot as im sure you can imagine.

Today (in my American time) is the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima bomb, which probably saved Nell's life, and she is still going strong at 100.

Well according to news just yesterday from Japan, they only surrendered because the USSR had declared war on Japan, not because of the A and H bombs.

America did not have the H bomb in 1945 so that is unlikely to have an effect. But apparently the declaration of war by the USSR was a significant factor which shortened the war that is often overlooked by American historians.

Not sure how it related to saving Nell's life since there were obviously many dangers after the Japanese surrender for Dutch nationals in Indonesia anyway (as mentioned above).
