OK better late than never. I Just noticed my mate from my youth, Bob Wansink, made it into active list top 50 at a very respectable rating. Good to see him active again. Excellent endings player.

    Ratings 2011-3

Here is the list of the top 50 active standard-rated players for period 3 of 2011.

The top three are unchanged with NZ Champion IM Anthony Ker ahead of clubmate IM Russell Dive and IM Ben Martin. Scott Wastney and Nic Croad move up three places each to fourth and fifth, giving Wellington four of the top five. That should settle any debate on which club is the strongest. Big movers are NZ Junior Champion Luke Li up 11 places to 13th, John Duneas up 16 to 20th, Noel Pinic up 8 to 22nd and John McDonald up 7 to 43rd. Ben Hague is in 10th place, after NZCF gave the all-clear for him to be included on the rating list. New entries include Quentin Johnson at 27 and Richard Stuart at 30. Robert Wansink is still provisionally rated so is not included in the top 50. He will become established in the next period and most likely will be in the top 20.

you have a very good point about wellington chess club been top in new zealand on rating
But as we all know this means nothing if they can't win 1 event in a year so just like the mighty all blacks who have been the top rated rugby side for 28 years and only 2 world cups to show for it.
also remeber about 6 years ago you gave all currant active players some 100 rating point gain for some reason have no idea what that was about and why.

just some points i have right or wrong.

    Cheers Mark

Not quite sure what you mean by winning one event in a year. Here is a list of the tournaments from 2009 to 2011 where Wellington chess club players have done just that. I'm sure that this will continue in 2012.

    Code:
    2009:
    1.	IM Anthony Ker 1st NZ player and NZ Champion in Queenstown Classic
    2.	IM Anthony Ker 1st NZ player and NZ Champion in NZ Rapid Championship.
    3.	IM Russell Dive 1st North Island.
    4.	Nic Croad 1st South Island and 1st= South Island Rapid.
    5.	Ross Jackson 2nd All-Canterbury behind GM Gawain Jones.
    6.	IM Anthony Ker 1st Gordon Hoskyn Memorial.
    7.	IM Anthony Ker 1st Kapiti Open.

    2010:
    1.	IM Anthony Ker 1st NZ Championship. Nic Croad 2nd.
    2.	Nic Croad 1st NZ Rapid Championship.
    3.	Nic Croad 1st= Wellington Open Rapid with GM Gawain Jones.
    4.	IM Anthony Ker 2nd Wellington Open behind GM Gawain Jones.
    5.	IM Russell Dive 2nd= Waitakere Trust Open behind GM Gawain Jones.
    6.	IM Anthony Ker and IM Russell Dive 1st= Kapiti Open.

    2011:
    1.	IM Anthony Ker 1st NZ Championship.
    2.	IM Anthony Ker 1st NZ Rapid Championship.
    3.	Scott Wastney 1st Upper Hutt Rapid.
    4.	Scott Wastney 1st South Island Rapid.

Actually, a change to the ratings system was approved by NZCF in July 2009. This saw the implementation of intermediate ratings. While ratings did increase, the increases were hardly of the magnitude of 100 points for all players! In fact, the higher a player's rating was before the change, the fewer points the player gained.

The following report was published in the NZ Chess magazine.

Arpad Elo wrote in his book, The Rating of Chessplayers: “An underrated player truly victimizes his opponents regardless of the outcome of the game. A difference between actual strength and indicated rating can result in each opponent losing points, undeservedly. The loss may not be great at any one time but small losses could accumulate into significant amounts.”

Over the past few years, there has been a gradual decline in the distribution of the rating pool of approximately 10%. At the same time, the number of juniors has increased significantly. In period 3 of 2006, there were 213 juniors, in period 3 of 2009, there are 437 juniors in the active rating pool. Juniors usually start with a low rating because they play in low-rated junior tournaments. Most will improve and some will improve significantly, sometimes even in a single rating period.

To counteract this deflation, intermediate ratings for players with exceptional performances have been introduced. There are now four phases in the rating calculation. Phase 1 calculates ratings for unrated and provisionally rated players while phase 2 calculates ratings for established players. Players with an exceptional performance (bonus point gain) in phase 2, get an intermediate rating that equals the pre-period rating plus the basic rating points change. Phases 3 and 4 are repeats of 1 and 2, this time using the intermediate ratings for a player’s opponents.

Using intermediate ratings significantly reduces the negative impact that underrated players have had on the rating pool. The new calculation has been applied retroactively. The cumulative rating point changes therefore have resulted in the sizable increases in ratings for this period.

Yes, I don't think very many people doubt Anthony deserves to be NZ's No. 1 rated player at present!

Here is the list of the top 50 active standard-rated players for period 1 of 2012.

Robert Wansink debuts at 19th while Noel Pinic continues his climb up the rankings, up 7 places to 15th. Hans Gao, Scott Yang and Peter Stuart are also new top 50 entries.

I'm astounded to find myself on this list. Apparently my (completely unintentional) strategy is to play one rated game every five years and win it! (Meanwhile I remain unrated in Australia, having only played four rated rapid games in 7 years).

I think I can fix that for you . One game in six rating periods hardly makes a player active so there needs to be a minimum number of games to qualify. Likely minimum is 5 games.

Thanks Rowan. I can't recall playing in any rapid events in NZ since before I moved to Tasmania in 2005. I did win a rapid with 4.5/5 in Dunedin a couple or so years ago but I thought it was meant to have been unrated.
