Player goals: strength increase or title?

This is just a little spin-off poll from the soft titles thread, and is mainly aimed at players in about the 1500-2100 strength bracket.

Suppose one day you find the proverbial magic lamp, give it the proverbial rub and the proverbial genie appears and says:

"Hi, I'm the proverbial genie and you have one wish. But there are only two legal choices available to you here. The first is that you can immediately increase your chess playing strength by 200 points. That increase is permanent, you will henceforth always be 200 points better than you otherwise would have been at the same stage in your life. But it comes with a catch. You are permanently banned from all Oceania Zonals. If you ever want a title you will have to get it the "old" way.

The second is that you can have a title. Your playing strength won't change one iota, but help yourself to some free quals or awards. If you're 1900, congrats, you are now a FIDE Master. 2100? You're an IM, and you get cheap entry to tournaments for the rest of your life. 1600 and female? You're promoted to W-something-M. 1500? It's your lucky day, none of the strong players showed up in your club championship this year and your name is up on the honour board sandwiched between all those legends. 1400? Hmmm, might be able to help you with some under 1750 tournament that you can boast about in the Toolbox to the zero people who care til the end of your days, or perhaps you might want a CM title, this young dude in Sydney just paid me $200 to take his away and set fire to it!"

    Which would you choose?

Voting is anonymous. Smart-aleck responses welcome.

Title or event win you can brag about even to your non chessplaying friends. Event win (can you choose the event? I'd like to win the world championships thanks) for sure!

If my chess gets better - titles will come. If I am still as hopeless as I am now - no title can make a difference. I can go to Hungary, Russia or Ukraine and buy myself a title (IM or even GM depending on how much i am willing to invest). But what is the point? It is better understanding and appreciation of the beautiful game of chess and/or improved tournament results that can make me feel better!

    Ditto.

So let me get this straight. You think that YOU'RE hopeless at chess? What does that make me?!

If I could get a 'dodgy' IM title and it was honoured by the ACF etc, why would you not choose it... Free tournaments for life?

    Maybe the questions should be:

    Are you a cheap arse
    vs
Do you appreciate chess and respect those who have spend time and effort understanding the game.

(On a side note I no way want to offend anyone with a current title. You earned them regardless of method obtained and should be proud...but my comments are more from a hypothetical viewpoint).

Can I have this Genie? 200 point strength increase will accomplish all my ambitions many times over.

hehe what do I need the silly metaphysical genie for? I can obtain both rating points and at least one title with my own means and strength!
PS Dear Genie, that was only a joke, make sure you don't forget the wish I made to you in our secret meeting in Sydney!

Jack, chess is just like any other intellectual activity - the deeper you get into it - the more you are realize how hopeless you are! I am simply being realistic.
