    Upholding humanity's honour

For your amusement and laughter. This is an (in)action shot of me (the balding guy) beating, of all things, a mobile phone while the phone's owner (the bald guy - not a tournament player but decent) watches the mindless violence unfold. This photo was taken at the Coven, Hobart's monthly goth/dark alternative club night.

The game itself should give a fair idea of the technology's limitations (and some of mine as well, though I do not normally play quite this kind of streaky garbage OTB.)

The blunder on move 16 suggests a rather short move horizon.

Mobile phone chess has a long way to go ...

The display is OK for me.
Although I could not stretch this to a comment on the content of the pic.

Yeah it's fine for me now too.

That's really weird, Kevin looks very much how I had pictured him...

    *bump*

Yeah, not sure who the goon with all the hair is up there. Anyway, en route to Krakow I took on a new class of opponent and pitted my wits against a jumbo jet via a chess game installed in the in-flight entertainment.

On what it claimed to be "medium" level the following unfolded:

    K. Bonham - B. 747

    PGN Viewer

I reset the difficulty level to "hard" and the same thing happened again. I tried 1.f4 and got a massive centre and won in about 20 moves. I played the Cabbage and won. I gave queen odds and won. I tried to win by moving only my queen (at least until it was left with only its king) and had captured a rook and two pawns when I accidentally blundered the queen (and won anyway moving other pieces.)

It's somewhat disquieting that something that does such a great job of keeping one in the air plays chess exactly as well as I fly - ie in its dreams.

Sorry. You should have been warned that playing the Qantas inflight chess was a waste of time.

Earlier this year I played against the B747 chess computer on 'hard' as White; the game started 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Ne4 6.d4 ed4 7.Re1 f5 8.f3 and the computer showed great skill in walking into checkmate by move 15.

I had a go at KasparovMate on the flight to India. After having to accomodate to input typed in like "e2e4" I got around to what turned out as an exciting match although I won the 3 games played, but not without effort. The first game was probably the most spectacular:

I don't think it was 2300, probably 2100, and I doubt it used an opening module, but still a worthwhile match. Don't know which airline it was.
Chess well played is imagination, calculation, observation, experience and memorization in order of importance.

Sorry would that be 8.c3? There is a knight on f3.

Well, i for one would be worried if the 747 was beating people at chess. Just fly the plane , thank-you!
But, yes, it is quite awful. No doubt an airline ploy to soothe bad-tempered passengers, or something.

Even their "hard" draughts level is not up to much, and I am hardly a great draughts player.

I also played the B747 computer at checkers on 'hard' and beat it quite easily.

Just on a plane with the Kasparov endorsed one that claims to go up to 2300. After a few losses caused by its deeply annoying sound effects blunders on my part, this is a fragment of a game I was playing against it (I'm white) when it was saved by the inflight entertainment being switched off:

If it is installed on the next plane I'm on, it's toast.

Can usually beat it on hard level at backgammon but took a while to do so at checkers which I'm probably just bad at since I've scarcely played it since about age eight.

I played that one too, on the way back from Athens. IMO it played at about 1600 level, maybe less. Incidentally I also played reversi on hard and won one game out of about 15.
