Various files to be sent to the selectors are attached to this post.

    They include:

    * ACF ratings results for applicants over the last two years
    * Results and statements supplied by applicants
    * Results of recent tournaments not covered in ACF lists
    * Results of players in FIDE-rated events outside Australia and not included elsewhere in the last 12 months.

These files are available for scrutiny and public comment concerning accuracy and omissions until 12 May.

Please send any corrections or additions to me at k_bonham@tassie.net.au or by PM here.

(edit: Ballarat Begonia added to recent results file)
(edit: Asian Championships and note about unrated players added to FIDE results file)

Note to applicants: to read the copies posted here you need to be logged in to this forum, however I will soon arrange for these to be posted on the Olympiad Appeal website and email a link.

Note that files attached to the above post are being revised as necessary as corrections or additions are received. Any time this is done it will be noted in the post itself.

As files are not available on the Olympiad Appeal website yet I have emailed them directly to the applicants as attachments.

    OLYMPIAD CAPTAINCIES

Expressions of interest are now open for the following positions:

    * Non-playing Captain, Australian Open Team
    * Non-playing Captain, Australian Women's Team

for the 39th Chess Olympiads to be held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia from 19 Sep to 4 Oct 2010

Applicants should apply immediately upon seeing this notice as the ACF reserves the right under Selection By-Law 13.5 to make a captaincy appointment at any time. However, unless the ACF decides to make an earlier appointment, applications will close on May 22 with results likely to be announced in early June. Applicants for playing positions may also apply for captaincies, on the understanding that they will be ineligible for a captaincy if they accept selection to a playing position, and vice versa.

Applicants for captaincies may be requested to assist the ACF with team registration matters, even before captaincy appointments have been confirmed. This is not a condition of application and will not affect an applicant's chances of being appointed in either direction, but the ACF is in need of assistance in this area in view of deadlines for registration and booking, the very late notice of such from the organisers, and the other commitments of some ACF officebearers.

Applicants may submit any supporting comments they wish to be passed on to either the selected players or the members of ACF Council, explaining why they think they should be selected as captains. The positions are filled by Council typically after taking into account the players' stated preferences (if any). Council has recently tended to follow the players' preferences in most cases, but is not obliged to do so. Applicants are also free to contact the applicants for playing positions and/or the Council regarding their applications as and whenever they wish. For more detail see item 13
of the ACF Selections procedures by-law at
    http://www.auschess.org.au/constitut...b%202008.p df [PDF LINK]

Expressions of interest can be sent by email to ACF Selections Director Kevin Bonham at k_bonham@tassie.net.au and copied to ACF President Gary Wastell at gwastell@netspace.net.au . Please call 0421 428 775 if it is necessary to arrange another method, or if an email application has not been acknowledged within seven days. Please be aware that I (Kevin) will have intermittent email access from May 18-29 on account of interstate work commitments.

This message has been sent to the ACF Selections Info email list, the ACF Newsletter and the bulletin board chesschat.org. Please feel free to distribute it to anyone who may be interested.

Provisional Olympiad Aus teams, since KB away

Since this has been made public by Ian Rout in the ACF newsletter, and Kevin has yet to post it on his closed thread, I thought I should put the (at this stage provisional, as subject to appeal) selections here:

    Olympiad Teams

The following are the provisional results of selections for the Australian teams for the 2010 Olympiad:

    Open Team:
    1. GM Zong-Yuan Zhao
    2. GM David Smerdon
    3. IM George Xie
    4. GM Darryl Johansen
    5. IM Stephen Solomon
    --------------------------------
    Reserves:
    6. IM Alex Wohl
    7. IM Igor Goldenberg
    8. IM Gary Lane

    Women's Team:
    1. WIM Arianne Caoili
    2. IM Irina Berezina
    3. Giang Nguyen
    4. WIM Biljana Dekic
    5. WFM Emma Guo
    --------------------------------
    Reserves:
    6. WFM Vaness Reid
    7. Sarah Anton

My thanks on behalf of the ACF to the selectors: IM Guy West, Ian Rout, FMs Tim Reilly and Geoff Saw, GM Ian Rogers (Open), Ingela Eriksson (Women's), for their many hours of work and careful thought on the selections.

    APPEALS

These selections are provisional and subject to appeal for a period of seven days. Appeals can be made only on the basis of procedural error that has unfairly affected an applicant's chances, or rankings that are clearly unreasonable. (It is not enough that an applicant thinks they should have been selected, the ranking must be such that no selector could reasonably have given it on the basis of the information provided.) Appeals must be accompanied by a deposit of $200 which will be refunded if the appeal is successful. For more information on appeals see items 9-11 of the ACF Selection Procedures By-Laws at link.

Congratulations to those selected and commiserations to those who are not in the teams at this stage. My thanks on behalf of the ACF to all applicants for their willingness to put themselves forward for this very important event.

Unfortunately IM Irina Berezina has had to decline her offered board 2 place for family reasons. The result of this is that Giang Nguyen, WIM Biljana Dekic and WFM Emma Guo are all moved up one place and WFM Vaness Reid has been offered the now vacant fifth position while Sarah Anton becomes first reserve.
