Very instructive endgame. Well played Gunner.

I agree with this. I think White could have stopped Be6 from working by 37.f4 with the idea of blocking ...gxf4 38.exf4 Bh3 with 39.f5. That is not the end of the story because after 37.f4 Bg2 (instead of taking the pawn), both 38.Nf6 and 38.fxg5 head for positions with some pawns off the board but where white still struggles because of the vulnerable b-pawn.

37.Kd1 leaves White with no time for f4-f5 and if the game isn't lost at this point it must be close to it.

Another (probably better) try for white is 35.e5 with the ideas that e4 is both a more useful square for the knight than d5 (in terms of stopping the black pawns) and a less vulnerable one to black's king.

So maybe white had chances to get back into it in the ending but it is a very tricky sort of position.

I had a look at this idea on a few occasions and saw that the pawns can be stopped - the king is quick but is of course dragged away from the action - but the split wing pawns theme wins again.

I've been trying for a rematch for 3 years! Though with JM between us, I may be waiting a while longer yet.
