Another update on the South African Open.

Jones suffered his drop of points in the open with a draw against the strong african IM, Amon Simutowe.

Rujevic had a draw against Mabusela. Rujevic commented after the game that he could have played better and missed some winning chances.

And finally, Puchen had a great win against Masango.

Games starting at 3AM Melbourne time.

Go to www.chesscube.com to watch the games live and www.saopen2009.com for all the results of the tournament.

Tonights games start at 3AM, so tune in and watch them live.

    Round 8 Results

GM Komarov - GM Gawain Jones 1/2
    IM Puchen Wang - Mosethle 1 - 0
IM Mirko Rujevic - Solomons 1/2

Gawain Jones agreed to a quick draw to consolidate his tournament position and conserve his energy for the final rounds.

Puchen Wang had a nice win against Mosetlhe.

Mirko Rujevic, who lost yesterday, had an eventful draw this morning:

On move 21 his opponent, who had just played a routine exchange of pieces on his chess board, mouse-slipped and his accidentally placed his piece one square short of the recapturing square on his computer. Mirko immediately rejected his opponent's take-back request and played a continuation which maintained a piece advantage. Only after the arbiters intervened and reset reconstructed the game position and clock times, did the game resume.

Later, after playing 33.g5?! Mirko claimed he had missed the draw offer made by his opponent moments earlier, and asked that he be allowed to accept the draw. His opponent, who had been considering the stronger replies 33.Rd1 and 33.Rxc2, now felt his position was better and refused to agree to the draw given that Mirko had made a move. The arbiters decided that play must continue and around 20 moves later it appeared that Mirko's hasty pawn advances on the king-side might have cost him the game. But some clever endgame technique and tactics allowed our Mirko to eventually hold on to the draw. The game finished after sunrise and Mirko left the venue to head off to work ... no wonder the guy is feeling exhausted.

I will upload the AUS games from the event below.

Thanks for the reports Gary and 'lost'. I've been thinking of you all getting up in the early hours of the morning. I hope Mirko is okay to drive (and work) after all that!
Look forward to seeing some of the games.

Gawain had rejected an early draw offer from Mirko.

Puchen was very tired and happy to have a quick draw.
