Please confirm which rook you are moving to d8? Your move is ambiguous.

    Kevin,

As I can not rule on my own games of course, can you make ruling here please? Schu's last clear move was on 5/8/09 and he has not tendered an unambiguous move since then.

He tendered Rd8 on 8/8/09, but as you can see I asked which rook.

Ruling please, has Schu's timed out under the seven day rule?

    Ruling

I know a timeout via illegal move was ruled in a previous tournament but I am reluctant to rule a timeout via ambiguous move in a tournament that lacks a specific stated rule that dictates that an ambiguous move is a forfeit. Nor is it my view that an ambiguous move should be the subject of a forfeit rule anyway; I think there should be other procedures for settling it.

I have PMd Schu asking him to clarify the ambiguous move ASAP. I may award a time bonus or penalty if there is a significant delay in this occurring. Furthermore, given that he overshot the seven-day limit as a result of the ambiguous move, you are now entitled to take between seven and fourteen days on one move in this game (once) without defaulting.

All time elapsed since Garvin's last move on 5-08 until Schu clarifies his ambiguous move counts against his total time for the game.

Schu has not made a move of any description, legal or ambiguous, for more than seven days and therefore has lost.

As the circumstances of this one are a bit unusual I should note that I agree Schu has timed out now that he has failed to respond to the request for clarification of his ambiguous move within seven days.

In any case it is customary for a player who times out in more than half their games to be excluded from the remainder.
