SA Chess Results

Alex Saint is doing an excellent job of updating the Saca Website. There are results of the SA Championship and Candidates, won by Zaric and Takos respectively. The results of the first two rounds of the interclub are also up and will be updated weekly. Chapman is playing board 1 for the Grasshopers team while Trevor Tao will playing board 1 occassionally for an Adelaide Uni Team. I believe he will be playing Zaric tonight.
I am on 1.5/2, an easy win, and a draw where I missed multiple opportunities to win in the opening, middlegame and endgame. Post the games if you really want to see them, nothing too interesting in them though.

Last night saw Trevor Tao beat Srbo Zaric, just, and Mark Chapman beat Alan Goldsmith. I managed to scrap a draw against Andrew Short after losing a pawn in the opening.

The Adelaide Cup was won by Srbo Zaric on 6.5/7 ahead of Justin Freytag on 5.5/7. Ther full results are on the SACA web page

The interclub competition is continuing with one round to go next week. There are joint leaders with Adelaide Red and Adelaide University's Blackmar-Diemer both on 24. Adelaide University's other team, Winkleman-Riemer is in third place with 22.5. The results should be on the SA website in a few days.

I played board four for the Blackma-Diemer team last night at lost to Michael Peake. I am not on 2/5 after losing the previous game to William Wedding. At least my rating is going to back where it should be, Under 1400.

The SACA Interclub season concluded last night with the Adelaide Red team of Bob Cowley, Bill Kerr, David Hester and Adam Takos winning by half a point. This victory was clinched with a 3-1 win over the Adelaide University team Winkleman-Riemer. This win included Bob Cowley's first ever win over Trevor Tao. The other Adelaide Uni team, Blackmar-Diemer that went to the final round tied with Adelaide Red could only manage 2.5 points against the bottom placed West Torrens team. The A grade best performed prize was jointly won by Bill Kerr and David Hester who both scored 8/9. The B grade competition was equally tight with the Chess Kids team winning by 1/2 point.

This was a excellent competition and seems to becoming, along with the University Open, one the best competitions in SA.

The next tournaments in SA are the University Open, the SA Junior Championships and the City of Adelaide, all in July.

The Sa Juniors were played last Thursay and Friday and the following titles where awarded

Under 12 - Sophie Eustace

James Obst did not take part, but most of the other top juniors did play.

The City of Adelaide has started with the top seeds being Srbo Zaric, Bob Cowley and Bill Kerr.

The City of Adelaide finished last Tuesday night with Zaric continuing his in his winning ways by taking 1st on 6/7. 2nd seed Bob Cowley, 3rd seed Bill Kerr and junior Prakash Thiyagarajah finished equal 3rd on 5.5/6. This was probably Prakash's best tournament with a win over Cowley and draw with Zaric. His only loss was to Bill Kerr.

The Penant competitions started on Tuesday night with the Adelaide red team of Cowley, Kerr, David Hester and Adam Takos, and the Madison's team of Zaric, Alex Sykes (returning after a bit of a break), Peter Ballard and Aviars Lidums (of chess sponsorship fame) being the favourites.

The SA Blitz Chess Championship was held last night with a great turnout of 22 players. Goran Srdic excelled (9.5/11) to become the 2004 SA Blitz Champion. He was closely followed by Amir Amini, Bob Cowley and Scott Colliver on 8/11. Scott was also the best under 1600.

The story of the tournament was Scott Colliver, who with a rapid rating of 1441 suprised many to come =2nd in one of the strongest fields ever for this tournament! Scott led for most of the tournament and defeated many strong players including Lidums, Peake and Amini and drew to Ivkovic and CCIM Srbo Zaric. A great tale of the Aussie Battler!

Full list of prize winners available on the website. It was good to see a couple of strong players, Neil Steffensen and James Hislop playing in the tournament after a break away from competative chess.

The City of Adelaide Junior (U/21) was won by 12 year old Fedja Zulfic with 8/8. Zulfic proved to a by far the strongest players in the field that was missing most of the best juniors in SA. This should not take away from Zulfic's win as he appears to be improving quickly and has been for the last 12 months.

The February Allegro was played last Tuesda night as the first tournament on the SACA calendar. It attracted 36 players, a larger than usaul field for tournaments of this type over the last year.
The tournament was jointly won by Srbo Zaric and Alan Goldsmith on 4.5 ahead of Michael Peake and Fedja Zulfic on 4. Peake has been playing very well of late, since becoming SACA President. Dutch player David Koetsier played in the tournament and I have been told he is now living here. I believe he has a Dutch rating of 1832, and ICCF rating of 2409. I was also told he had a FIDE rating but cannot find any record of it. I believe David Flude has played and lost to Koetsier in correspondance chess. Full results on SACA webpage

Closest I could find is a Swiss player called "D. Koestinger" with a rating of around 2200. No "Koetsier" is on the list, or any Dutch David with a remotely similar surname.

Yes it is although Sheldrick apparently forfieted his last game with Robin Wedding because of previous personal differences. Very sad to see to the relationship of two former very good friends breakdown to the point that one refuses to even play the other. Takes it step a further than the Shirov Kasparov refusal to shake hands.

The SA Championships was started last night with the tournament being changed to a swiss tournament incorparating both the championship and candidates players. This happened because of the failure of 8 players of significant strength to enter championships. A minimum of 1700 had been previously decided on and only 6 players over 1700 entered, Srbo Zaric, Bob Cowley, James Obst, Rober Hoile, David Koetsier with his Dutch rating of 1832 and Amir Amini.
Well onto the results. The biggest surprise was Zaric was held to a draw, or perhaps more accurately was forced to hold on for a draw as black against Gavin Haydn. It was Haydn not Zaric who had the winning chances. All the other top 5 seeds won, although Franz Schoeh fought exceptionally well against Koetsier and made him work very hard for the win. Karlis Atrens caused an upset on board 6 showing his steady improvement is continuing.

The SACA AGM is on Sunday, 1pm, chess centre. If what I have heard is correct we will be seeing a significant move to youth.

The seond round the SA Championships was played last night. The highlight of the night was probably the board 2 clash of James Obst and Michael Peake. Obst should have won the game fairly easierly but blundered badly in a winning king and pawn ending. This left Peake with a difficult to win ending. After much play with both players queening Peake managed to get up three pawn to none, but then was unable to avoid check so they agreed to a draw.

Leaders are on 2/2 are Cowley, Hoile, Amini and Garcia-Blanco who upset 5th seed Koestier. Full results and next weeks pairing are on the SACA website, www.sachess.org/2005/championship.htm
