Another weak as ditch water ACT tournament started a few weeks ago. It is the Belconnen Club Championships - won last year by Milan Grcic.
The Belconnen Club Championship started last night with a reasonably large field and after late entries will probably be the biggest club event in Canberra this year. Up to three half-point byes are available for those entering late; please be there a little before the starting time of 7:30pm for updating the computer.
On the subject of byes, next week is a long weekend so some existing entrants will be away - please advise as early as possible if you are one of them and haven't done so already.
Nothing esepcially dramatic happened in the first round, with only one half-upset. The hard games started early, though, with Junta Ikeda and Edward Xing, who finished equal second and equal fourth in the ACT Championship, meeting on the top board.
The results are below and the full table can be seen at
http://www.netspeed.com.au/ianandjan/IansPage/
A provisional draw will be circulated later when there is a better picture of who will be unavailable.

People who have been on school holidays or otherwise engaged can join in next week on three half-point byes; be sure to arrive before the start of play. Current players requiring byes should advise Jenni Oliver or me with as much notice as possible. Jenni will circulate a provisional draw wid-week.

I assume Jenni is only getting zero for not playing, whereas at St George she would be on 1.5 points. Get your act together girl.
I should be on 1.5 as well (all the others are). However as DOP I can assign myself what I like (oh the power). I use myself as the bye putting myself in when there are an odd number and out when needed. However I prefer to lurk at the bottom end of the field and have no desire to play someone on 1.5 points.Quote:

At the mid-point of the Belconnen CC championship a sole leader emerged for the first time with Junta Ikeda winning an interesting game against me while a less interesting draw was played between the other two joint leaders.
Andrew Brown scored an upset win against Kishore Sreetharan to move into equal second with several others. Leading scores:
4½ - J. Ikeda
4 - G. Oliver, Brown, Hoang, Ali, Neeman
3½ - Rout, Guo-Yuthok, Yuan, Grcic

I will assume that these reports are actually written by Ian Rout, otherwise Jenni has really improved to be in top section ;)
Actually I did think about that, but for various other comps, I have put a disclaimer that the reports were written by Ian, so I didn't think I needed to point it out. (Also as you have stated, it is kinda obvious :) )Quote:

There were surprising results (upset would probably be too strong a word) on the top two boards. Khoi Hoang won against Junta Ikeda while Gareth Oliver reportedly fell into a tricky mate against Andrew Brown, though Andrew was two pawns up at the time. Allegedly one player resigned a drawn position which sounds like it could be an ending that I was demonstrating at the Development Squad last month (though not to that player).
The two leaders have not yet played so the winner of their encounter next week, if it is decisive, will secure at least equal first.
Leading scores
6 - Hoang, Brown
5 - Yuan, Sreetharan, Ali, Ninchich, G. Oliver
The winner(s) will probably come from this list though players on 4½ could still feature if results go the right way.
