The news has just broken Friday evening 16th July that Bobby Fischer has been detained trying to leave Japan and is probably to be deported to America
Fischer is likely to be tried for the crime of playing chess.
Write to the American Embassy now pleading his case.
Fischer is to chess as Mick Jagger is to rock music, or Pamela Anderson to all lovers of the female form. They are all larger than life.

I guess from America's viewpoint Fischer moved his lips so much they began to look as large as Mick's and said things which like Pamela's videos could then never be put back in the box.

My guess is that he'll be considered unfit to stand trial.

His crime is not playing chess or violating sanctions but rather of being an extremely irritating thorn scratching up against the American propaganda machine.

I wonder if capturing Bobby Fischer will help Bush's election chances :hmm:

They'll probably try to claim him as an Al Qaeda sympathiser.

(Which he is ...)

yeah, a small dilemma for the propaganda machine really. fischer still has some all-american national hero credibility for licking those ruskies.

i seem to recall back in the 80's that reagan passed a congress motion declaring fischer was actually still world chess champion -- because those cheatin' commies were too scared to meet him on his terms.

so now it looks like he'll be deported back to the land of the free. it could happen to a nicer guy.

Penalty: To Play in as many tournaments in a year as he can including top flight tournaments like linares! :)
wouldn't that be good. :)

Being a "Castaway", "Searching for Bobby Fischer" is not "Alien" to the "American Beauty" of "Hang 'em High".

If the current Yank administration have him extradicted "home" before their federal election, they are more stupid than I ever imagined.

"Chess genius Bobby Fischer has been detained in Japan for use
of an invalid passport. In 2002 Rene Chun described Fischer's
descent from chess champion to paranoia, hubris, and hatred."

I saw his request for political asylum was denied - looks like he's going back to the US. I did like tparker's suggested solution of punishment for him ;)
