Thanks for the info!
Will the tournament be FIDE rated?
Joerg

Good question Joerg which brings me into my (rare) wheinging mood again! Could please all Clubs which advertise their tournaments, championships etc, state clearly if those events are
FIDE RATED
AFC GRAND PRIX (when weekenders) including CLASS and could they please provide
ENTRY lists?
Also (when applicable) could they attach their website LINKS?
This information helps Chessplayers and Clubs.
Having said all that, please all chess players note that this tournament is a real quality event the participants of which are given the chance to play vs some of the strongest players in Victoria!

Hello everyone,

After tonight's MCC committee meeting I can state that this will be a FIDE rated event, and that the arbiter for the event will be Malcolm Pyke, ie myself,

That will do for now, but will post more soon,

That is great - Peter and myself will almost certainly join.
One general logistics question: so far I've only been at the MCC during weekends. How is the parking spot availability at weekdays evenings??

I park on Kay Street just off Nicholson which has 4 hour spots ending at 630, but save on Friday/Saturday you're probably safe to park in most places...

Ok to decode the code

players in Red indicate confirmed entries

players in Green indicate very likely entries

players in Blue indicate I am unsure of their plans but would not at all be surprised if they play

Hopefully for those who might be planning to play this is an indication of the field size and composition.

To those who I am not absolutely aware of their intentions to play who are on this list, and of course any other interested players, I would ask that you call/text me ( Malcolm Pyke ) on 0408 150196 after 10 am tomorrow.Alternatively, you could call the chess club on ( 03 ) 9416 3149 after 12 pm. The reason for the call is so that I know of your entry and can set up sufficient clocks, and so that if you wished you could come a bit later than the 6 pm close of entries, and closer to the 7 pm starting time.

I am planning to pair all known entries at 7 pm, and then anyone who might arrive after this time who wishes to play will be paired on a first through the door technique, ie player 1 to arrive after publication of pairings will play the second similar, 3rd and 4th etc. This is to avoid any holdup for those who turn up on time

looking forward to seeing lots of you tomorrow,

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

I won't be playing this time Malcolm but I urge anyone who is undecided to go and see the changes at the MCC for themselves. It's a great place to play and I'd definitely enter if I wasn't so busy at the moment.

Just to confirm from Malcolm's post #4 above, the City of Melbourne Open has been registered with FIDE for the October list (there is no publicly viewable page on the FIDE site for rating periods in advance of the current one). Also, FIDE is yet to update the software to change October registrations to the new September 1 list, but apparently this change will be going ahead.

Hi Malcolm, due to circumstances I have already emailed to Grant (please feel free to read the content) I will not be able to make it for this one!
I wish you all guys all the best!
This time my preferences lean toward Mirko, he plays better when the weather gets cooler!
My sentimental favourite is my mate Rad Chmiel!!!

Hello everyone,

We are very pleased with the turnout and the makeup of the field for the City
of Melbourne Open. The field is strong one with 3 IMs and 2 FMs ( we extend a warm welcome to IM Greg Hjorth and FM Erik Teichmann in their first respective events for a while at the MCC; for Greg a very long while!) and a total number to date of 32 entrants; we expect that there is every chance that field size will increase. I had to do the pairings manually as Swiss Perfect was having a headache, and did unfortunately transpose a couple of seedings, so I apologize to the players involved in that mix up.

Here are the round one pairings and results so far.

It can be seen that all games barring the board 11 clash went to seeding, but Chess Chat's own Watto held the draw there quite comfortably.

I have not yet been able to locate any Australian rating for Greg Hjorth, as he is not on the master file, so have added his correct FIDE, and just used the made up rating that I used in round 1 to continue the seedings at the top end of the event as the ones we started with to ensure continuity

As I have said, we welcome extra entries at this stage. We would like to hear about them prior to Thursday so that I can finalize the pairings for those catching up. It is also possible for players who feel that they do not have the time to play a catch up game and yet still wish to play in the event to have a 0.5 bye for round 1.

finally a game from Board 3 in round 1, with some thoughts of the winner, and some of the scribe that you read now, enjoy,,,,sort of, undoubtedly there may be some difficulty who said what, but then again maybe not

Hi Malcolm
In the thread "Greg Hjorth is back" Bill Gletsos provides all information related to IM Hjorth's rating!

Greg's current FIDE rating is 2378.

Prior to 2005 he played in 7 events in the US between 1998 and 2000. Greg had a USCF rating in 2000 of 2516 and his current USCF rating is 2493.

Greg was last active in Australia in 1993.
His current ACF rating is 2423.

You can now safely adjust it!

I know of when two of the postponed round 1 games are being played, on Friday and Thursday respectively, and hope to organize the other two games for those sort of time frame. I understand that the one postponed Round 2 game should also be played some time this week, so that will be good to have that out of the way before Round 3

Will not post the well too many conjectured pairings, sorry, but will as soon as I can,

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

report to come soon!

Hello everyone,

City of Melbourne Open Round 2 report

Ok so a story about the various boards; in board order

On Board 1 the game between Greg Hjorth and Richard Voon was a 9.b4 King's Indian - the Bayonet; Greg looked better early, and may have been better early, but ended up saying he was lucky Richard offered him a draw

On Board 2, Guy West played Mehmed Dizdarevic, and it was a Benko Gambit, an opening that has certainly been played by Guy many times. Guy eventually gave a piece in a sequence of moves to expose Mehmed's king, which eventually netted him Mehmed's queen, and later the game

Board 3 was postponed

Board 4 Garry Lycett versus Mirko Rujevic was in what appeared to be some sort of Czech Benoni structure when I first looked at it. I am unsure quite which were the first moves to get to this position, but will guess King’s Indian, Ruy Lopez or Sicilian. Mirko had his Bishop on g7, and later d4 when the position opened a little. Early on, Garry took firm control of the only open file on the board, the b-file. Unfortunately there was not really anywhere much to go down the file as Mirko covered any significant entry points, in particular b7 was watched for some time by the Bc8!. I didn't exactly see the conclusion, but the position I recall may have seen Garry with a passed a-pawn, and N v B, but otherwise equal material, being a Q + R + 4P each. Garry had pawns on a3, d5, g2, g4, Nh2, Kh1, Rb7, Qb5 unsure of the queen, and Mirko had pawns on d6, c5, e4, f4, Bd4, Rg7, Qf6, Kg8; Mirko's last move was Rg7. Mirko had the clearly better position.

On Board 5, Domagoj and Tom played a MacCutcheon French which quickly became quite closed after Tom pushed ...c5-c4. This is an interesting structure, as the interlocked pawn structure of both sides forms a mountain range in the middle of the board, and the access paths on the queenside are quite limited for white, and similarly though not as profound for black, on the kingside, though still present as a ghost as Tom's pawns were quite inflexible on that side of the board as advancing them put them in danger of being lost.
In the end, the position opened after much maneuvering by both players and Tom found his position disintegrating, and lost. After game analysis helped by onlookers David Hacche, Mirko Rujevic and James Morris found that Tom was winning quite clearly in some lines, just that they weren't that easy to see.

On Board 6 James Morris made a mistake that cost him two pawns, then fought tenaciously for the remainder of the game, and made the game an awkward task to convert, but in the end the two pawn deficit was enough and Rad Chmiel won.

On Board 7, David Hacche played Bosko Mijatovic, in what initially looked like a Chigorin Queen's gambit, but later on seemed to be some sort of double queen pawn game that just grew that way like topsy, I saw David launch a big pawn push on the queenside, and managed to infiltrate with a Trojan "Horse" to c5, not as in a fake gift, but as in " it got in!" I recall that early in the game, Bosko started a kingside pawn demonstration, but later on his king had to end up there. David also opened and controlled the e- file which was also very useful for him.

On board 8, Pano Skiotis and Richard McCart were involved in a battle of classical v hypermodern in an Alekhine’s Hunt variation ( 1. e4 Nf6 2. e5 Nd5 3. c4 Nb6 4. c5 Nd5 5. Bc4 e6 ) Pano managed to put a knight on d6 which was a big problem for
Richard, who was unsuccessful in his attempts to exchange off Pano’s central pawns well enough to liberate his position.
Pano left his king in the middle for a long while, I am actually unsure if he ever did get castled, and used his h-pawn as an extra probe shoving it down the board too.
Eventually I walked past at a point when Richard had chosen to give up a piece on b4, which looked insufficient to me, and proved to be so.

On Board 9, Peter Fry essayed his favourite Nimzo-Larsen attack (1.b3) and Roger Beattie adopted a King’s Indian sort of formation, and shoved his a-pawn down the board eventually driving Peter’s Bb2 back to a1. I saw that lines had opened on the kingside and that is the last I can say with authority about the game.

On Board 10, Paul Kovacevic and Jean Watson were playing the white and black sides of a Catalan type position respectively. The game was quite level for a long time, though Paul had 2B v 2N for a long while, and some nagging pressure. An eventual miscalculation saw Jean lose a pawn on a5, and if the last minor pieces were swapped there or not, she was unable to hold the resulting ending.

On board 11, Jim Papadinis essayed his new favourite, the Scandinavian, against Jake Kostrzewa. Jake said of the game later, I thought I was winning his queen, and then I just ended up losing after a blunder; the position Jake is referring to saw the Black queen very cramped on a5 but just able to get away through d5, it’s only square. Unfortunately for Jake, from d5 it was very well posted to go on the counterattack, firstly against a loose Nf3 and an unmoved Rh1. Jim won.

On Board 12, the initially planned game Alec Knox v Jose Escribano had a late change in participants when Damien Arkins walked into the venue to ask about the event starting “that” night. It seems that some document regarding events for the year at MCC that some clown called Pyke produced had errors in it….
Damien played against Jose instead and the game was the last to finish. Starting as a Sicilian of some sort, possibly Dragon-esque, the game became a battle between knight and bishop and 2 R and Q each. Jose had retained his Bg7 and had lots of useful things for it to aim to do. Damien had a very good queenside pawn majority, and chances of advancing it as time permitted. Damien lost his knight somewhere around here, leading to many pundits passing verdict on the game. But chess is a funny game not least when the shortage of time for both players became a factor. In the resulting piece up position Jose allowed much simplification, and perhaps shed a pawn or two along the way, and eventually an ending of Q+B ( Jose ) v Q and a couple more pawns ( Damien ). In the resulting quick play Jose lost his remaining pawns and the game was drawn soon after that.

On board 13, Wilfredo Jose, a long time participant at the club played Luthien Russell, a recent émigré south of the border to Victoria, from the wilds of the north called Canberra. The game was a Sicilian of some description and Luthien managed to win an exchange at some point, and here remaining heavy pieces exerted a lot of pressure against a very backward pawn on d3. I didn’t see the exact conclusion, but Luthien won at some point.

On board 14, Roger McCart and Stephen Jago battled out an interesting Caro-Kann, with an early change in move order meaning that Roger had to recapture with his queen after …Nf6xe4. Stephen then deployed his bishop on g7 and the game was fairly calm until Stephen invested a pawn to crack open the white king’s cover, but the players declared peace around here somewhere, as there were sort of perpetual things in the air, and there might have even been some mating things for Stephen in my mind.

On Board 15, Nikola Ivanov unfortunately learnt a painful lesson about being “too creative/cute” when an opportunity to simply castle and preserve his very sound extra pawn was short circuited by his choice to play …Ke8-f7 instead which left his king in a parlous state, as Stephen Wertheim ably proved. As Stephen put it, “ I probably had nothing if you played that” and unfortunately the something that nothing turned into cost Nikola one pawn, then another in his attempts to avoid mate, and to no avail in the long run. Post game analysis of even a very casual nature showed that should Nikola have sat back and played solidly for those two or three moves, the point would have been his.

On Board 16, Judd Niemann played a Colle type start and the position became a quiet sort of set up as White against the King’s Indian, an opening that Alex Kaplan, Judd’s opponent plays often. The game remained fairly uneventful, but an oversight cost Judd a piece and that was enough for Alex who simplified into a lone piece and pawns against pawns position soon to record the win.

On board 17, Jurgis Oraha, a recent addition to the chess playing family at MCC ( though not to chess in general ) played Sarah Anton on the white side of Sarah’s Sicilian. The game remained a closed variation as there was no d4 from Jurgis, and Sarah gained a lot of space on the queenside early on in the game. Both sides conducted some interesting maneuvers on the kingside in the aid of attacking and defending, and an unclear knight tour by Sarah lead to her winning a whole rook which did not look as convincing later, but worked a treat during the game. The game went on for a while after Sarah went a rook up, but the material told in the end, and Sarah went on to win.

On Board 18, John Beckman played David Rees, another new player to the club who is playing in his first event at club level. David made some unfortunate moves early, and John’s two knight’s arrived on both f7 and c7 with disastrous results for David, ending the game. I can say to David if he should read this, that behind most players barring world champions lays a battleground of games lost horrendously; I have a large collection, and so do most people I know. The most important thing is to enjoy it, and that you seem to do, to which I say bravo!

Board 19, that there was one, was another of the surprises of the night. Milenko Rikalo and Milan Brkljac both joined the event, and were paired together for the night, with Milenko picking black when drawing for colour. Milenko went down a pawn by the first time I saw the position so I can surmise they were both moving quickly; not a huge surprise from Milan, as although he has been a member for a long time, he usually just plays blitz. Milenko is returning after a break of a few years, and it is good to see him again. Milan may be a blitz player primarily, but he is also a very good endgame player and ably converted his extra pawn in a rook ending.

whew! well that is enough for now hopefully, sorry I don't have any actual games.

Take care and God Bless, Macavity

Lucky escape for black in Hjorth-Hacche:

On move 47, Qb7+ followed by Bc4 sets up a mating net.

Then on 49 the computer says white is about +4 by simply queening, but it appears that after 49.c7 exd3 50.c8=Q e2 white cannot actually win and the +4 is only artificially maintained by endless checking. So that one is a blind alley.

51.g4 looks like another real win for white however. (...e2 g5 discovered check gets the e-pawn).

56.h5 looks good too - the idea is that unlike in the game, white can play Bg2 next move defending the diagonal that the c-pawn is on. Must be very hard for black to hold three widely spaced passed pawns especially when his own is so easily covered.

I was there tonight! Apparently James lost because he blundered a Pawn! I spoke to James before the game, he said he was feeling ok, but to be honest he didn't look 100%!

:eh: you need an excuse for losing to an IM?

That opeining Teichmann played against Mirko was pretty interesting. The black queen was able to rampage around the broken white pawns.

I meant that I wasn't using it an excuse ... no shame in losing to a bettter player...:)

31 Bxe4?? was the losing blunder. After 31 Ng4 Dean would have had some compensation for the exchange. Maybe I shouldn't have accepted the exchange sac, as Black is quite a bit better without going for the material.

What happened? Were you accused of cheating for going outside?

I don't mind a bit of a walk outside during a game and am always worried about this.

Going outside is not poor sportsmanship...unless it incorporates..a) continued use of F...word (that is supposed to describe sexual intercourse in a rude way but strangely enough also means so many things to so many people in australia b) telling your opponent "you are lucky patzer you do not know anything about chess" c) smashing chess pieces over opponent's head d) smashing opponents head over the pieces e)screaming f) all of the above.

Therefore, unless none of the events listed from A to F have taken place...there is nothing wrong with what you did. After we finish our games, its Ok to go out of the club :).

and as i was setting up the position where i made a mistake some players were standing over me

We had a very minor incident in a rapid here recently where a player had just lost a game in an unlucky manner and another player immediately jumped in and demonstrated how the position should have been played in a rather pushy manner, causing the losing player to rather loudly instruct the kibitzer to go away.

Players watching from the sidelines should be cautious about their response when players have just finished the game and should remember to give the player who has lost (or missed a win) a bit of time and space.
