As a consumer of information can I provide the feedback that I would prefer a direct link. Tricking people to "explore" your website by not linking directly to the page is just annoying.

If you had had a direct link you would have missed seeing who the Victorian chess player of the month was and as a consumer of information you would have regretted that. Also and in the strictest confidence I don't know how to put the links in

Hi Publicist. You just go to the specific page on your website you're wanting to link to and then copy and paste the link for that page into your post. Hope this makes sense. :)

Folks this is one of the few large scale weekenders in Melbourne. Just think of it. No travel cost no accomodation cost for Melbournians. Good playing conditions, early bird discounts, great opportunity, don't miss it

Oops - that a fair cop, Bill!My post #23 & #24 are not about the Australian Championship 2008 but about peoples sense of humour or lack thereof and in direct response to Publicists post #21.

As anyone can see my original response (post #20) was in reply to Misha's post #19.

Now Publicist could have chosen to reply to Mischa's query as well, however he chose not to.

It would have ended there, excpet Publicist couldnt keep his yap shut.
Therefore I simply responded to Publicists post #21 with my two responses in post #23 & #24.

One question with regards to the early bird discount: Is there any alternative way of payment (bank transfer, direct debit) instead sending it via a letter?

Issuing a cheque costs me $10, and sending cash is not really my cup of tea...

David, is your outrage because Bill called them clowns? I see no other reason for your reaction of disdain from Bill's post.

I'm sure you value the contributions and even respect these men, but doesn't your response seem quite OTT proportionate to the call of a 'clown'?

1.e4 nearly always

against sicilian he mixes closed and open.

Against French mixes KIA and normal lines.

Against 1..e5 usually plays plays 2.Nf3 but also plays 2.Bc4

Study vs Chess.

I remember someone years ago putting this very well (might have been Ian Rogers in a book or interview?)

Exams are coming up, so you feel you should be studying. Naturally you procrastinate instead. But, just watching TV or something makes you feel guilty. So... you study chess. i.e. You can get your most effective chess study done before an exam!

But for those of us not destined to become chess professionals, it might be that the effect all this chess study has on our exam results is more important :)

Best way is to study hard for your exams, get a brilliant result, parents on side, convince them a nice reward would be a trip to Adelaide for the Freytag tournaments, play in under 1600, gives you 4 extra weeks to prepare your revenge on JaK! :hmm:  :D

Actually, what happened was that he intended to play in the Christmas Swiss, but 2 days before his father fell very ill, and spent the week looking after him.

As for me, yes, I will probably be playing. Why wouldn't I, it is a very strong tournament in my home city, and there is no reason not to play.

And I was implying the sort of contradictory statement "definately maybe", not anything else.

There have been some changes at the top where Goldenberg moves ahead of Solomon and Schön moves ahead of Cheng. The most significant rating changes are of course in the lower half where Lakshman gained over 200 points and Stephanie Gu gained almost 150.

With entries at this stage having reached 74 it is possible that there will be 100 or more players at starting time, in which case the arbiter reserves the right to accelerate the first 2 rounds

that Caesar guy
04-06-2009, 04:47 PM
I am NOT a fan of acceleration, it does horrible things to pairings! Mainly because Round 3, and even Round 4 sometimes, essentially turns into Round 1which in reality minimises the number of rounds. It is better to let things pan out.

Acceleration for one round makes no sense, but it is very useful for two or three rounds as it reduces the number of possible players on 3/3 or n/n. So there is more likelihood of a solo winner:D . Hard to be serious while watching the footy show. When the event gets 120 players instead of 60 it should be the prerogative of the arbiter, and need not be mentioned beforehand.

In the other place there is a comment by Malfegor about how acceleration works:

Simply put,
Give the top half of the draw an imaginary point for the first two rounds so the first round pairings look like what would be the third round pairings if everything went according to rating for the first two rounds.

A couple of points about this:

1. Giving the top half of the draw an imaginary point actually makes the first round pairings look like what would be the second round pairings in a normal Swiss with all the higher-seeded players winning in round 1. (Top quarter plays second quarter, third quarter plays fourth quarter).

2. The "imaginary point" method is widely used (many pairing programs use it, USCF uses it and I think a version of it was used last Olympiad - FIDE doesn't seem to recognise any specific system), but is actually not the right way to do it. Reuben in his book (1997 edition) suggests the following:

Basically in the first round the top quarter is paired against the second quarter and the third quarter against the fourth, all in rating order. In the second round the winners from the top half are paired together. The winners from the bottom half are paired with the highest rated players who did not win in the first round. The latter are listed in rating order, irrespective of whether they drew or lost. In the third round players with 2/2 from the top half are paired together. The players with 2/2 from the bottom half are paired with the highest rated players with less than 2/2. The process is continued in Round Four if necessary, unless the tournament is only of Five Rounds [capitals his-KB], in which case the Seeded System is used after Round Three. There are many variations on this basic system. One of the problems is that, once controllers have grasped the basic principle, they often branch off into their own ideas, without grasping the finer points.

He then goes into a couple of pages of more detailed procedures for how to do it.

One problem with the imaginary point method is that you can end up with players from the bottom half of the field, and on perfect scores, playing each other, which the method Reuben gives always avoids. In simulations I have done using the imaginary point method, it now and then happens that a bottom half player plays on board 1 in round 3 or 4 (depending on field size) if you take the acceleration off then. This is exactly the sort of thing acceleration is supposed to stop.

I note that the current form of the announcement says "the arbiter reserves the right to accelerate the first 2 rounds". It should say "at least the first 2 rounds" in case there is a bottom-halfer on 2/2.

Another problem is that in round 2, the top-half players who have drawn in round 1 will all or nearly all play each other, which means they end up clustered around 1/2 after two rounds, while Reuben's method pairs them with bottom-half players who scored an upset win (who they will most likely defeat and go to 1.5). That means that when you use the imaginary point method you quite often get a massive jam of players on 1/2 going into round 3, and if you take the acceleration off then you get almost as many mismatches in round 1 as you would have had in round 3.

The imaginary-point method will still usually acheive the basic aim of ensuring that the tournament winner has been very thoroughly tested and has played other top and well-performing seeds, but it makes such a mess of the rest of the field that I do not recommend using it unless you have to.

People often argue that you need to use acceleration if the number of players exceeds 2^n where n is the number of rounds, in order to ensure the top two players on the weekend meet with a victory (if it occurs) ensuring an outright lead for one of them. This claim is pseudo-mathematical bunkum (another one that is equally silly is that you need n+2 rounds where 2^n is the number of players). Firstly an outright leader is often produced in less than n rounds as a result of draws in the top half. Secondly no matter how many rounds you have, draws may prevent an outright leader emerging by any specific round number.

Well I am glad we got that out of the way. Just repeating what I said
With entries at this stage having reached 74 it is possible that there will be 100 or more players at starting time, in which case the arbiter reserves the right to accelerate the first 2 rounds

With entries at this stage having reached 74 it is possible that there will be 100 or more players at starting time, in which case the arbiter reserves the right to accelerate the first 2 rounds

So, what objectives (if any) form the basis of this decision?

If the objective is to prevent mismatches then the number of entries isn't the deciding factor in the extent of mismatching; mismatching is a function of field spread by ratings.

If the objective is to ensure the winner is thoroughly tested and as far as possible plays strong players, then why put a premature cap on the number of rounds for which acceleration applies? (The correct procedure is as follows: accelerate at least two rounds, then accelerate any further rounds required to get all bottom-halfers below 100% provided that at least the last two rounds are not accelerated.)

If the objective is to make it more likely that the top two seeds/performers play, why 100 for the cutoff?

And if acceleration is used, will you use the proper method or the cheap American import? (I know Box Hill uses 2 imaginary points in many of its tournaments, but those events have very different objectives to a major open.)

Doesn't affect me since I am playing in another event this weekend and only rarely travel to the north island for chess events anyway, but acceleration is one of those devices that people shouldn't attempt to program without first reading following the manual. :D

I’ve just had a quick look at the CV website archives and there were 69 entries last year, 81 in 2007, 68 in 2006, 96 in 2005, 97 in 2004. 100 entries may not eventuate if history is anything to go by but it would be nice to see it get back to the high 90s at least! :)

Thanks Solo, you succinctly expressed what I would otherwise made a very lengthy post about.

Best way is to study hard for your exams, get a brilliant result, parents on side, convince them a nice reward would be a trip to Adelaide for the Freytag tournaments, play in under 1600, gives you 4 extra weeks to prepare your revenge on JaK! :hmm:  :D

Haha, perhaps she took your brilliant advice :)

Not so much... sadly, my parents have decided that studying is more important than chess.

Against Rujevic, after 17...0-0 I have 18. Bg5! winning a piece. Instead, I play 18. d4 straight away and after 18...exd4 I realised I wasn't winning the piece...
:wall: :wall: :wall:

Such is life.

Rujevic played the strongest field (1.5/2 against Solomon and Jones), excellent result.
Eric well done as well.
Good result for Domagoj (with a bit of luck could've been even better, he had me and Solo in a grip!)

Very nice work holding the Exchange Spanish as Black against a GM. If anybody wants to see this game, it's still available on the live display (http://www.boxhillchess.org.au/live/tfd_full.htm).

Good result for Domagoj (with a bit of luck could've been even better, he had me and Solo in a grip!)

Thanks for that, Igor. Well, speaking of luck I was perhaps slightly fortunate in round 1 against Thomas Feng. He played well, and with bit more luck, he could have got something out of the game. So I guess it all evens out at the end.

Lots of gossip! About everything and everyone! I acted as some sort of the Forum's representative since almost everyone that I hadn't seen for ages, came and asked me all the why, what, who, how, when and wheres you can imagine. I took Manuel's line of defence and of course I knew noooooooothing! :P
I heard so much gossip and rumours about the Melbourne Cup thingy, that I doubt it will ever see the light of publicity in the related thread!
I won't say much about it but think in lines of MIO, some potential sponsorship, some interstate voyages. I am not willing to disclose anything more or less of this stuff, after all there was no specific references made just roumorology! :P
A fantastic speech on behalf of Leonid Sandler during the presentation in the end of the tournament. He apologised on behalf of the CV President Katrin who was not able to make it, Despite his initial hesitation he was successful!
Eclectic was there and in great form: Apart from his being amongst the prize winners  he found the time to explain to me his latest idea about a revolutionary time control system which the more I think about it the more attractive I find it! Again no revealing further information!
Friendly atmosphrere throughout the tournament. Winners and losers intermingled in analysis and joke sharing after the games. Jean wondered how many rating points were squandered during those (for some glorious, for some other traumatic) three days of Chess. No worries Watto, we' ll get them in the next one!
Five blitz games vs Kyle Gibson between rounds. The result? A non surprising 5-0 to Kyle!   Hehe, I am preparing my revenge for the next one! :wall:
I was involved in a tense battle vs young Solo! After an eventful middlegame in which I thought I had the upper hand I blundered and I found myself in a losing position. Then, to my surprise, Anthony offered a draw which I rejected saying "no way mate, you have a winning position here, you better concentrate and find the win. The youngster found the winning line and I resigned on the spot. He is a great kid and with a great sense of humour like his dad! He is having a break from academic life having finished HS. I wish him all the best!
Non Chess related
Good to see Eclectic in great form in the non chess section as well. He joined. He is pleasant, sharp, hilarious, likeable! He can find the funny side of things in everything including the canteen door!
In the same category undoubtlly belong:
Shane Lawson, "knock shops" and "black pepper"
Igor Goldenberg "the consultant"
Leonid Sandler " the Trojan Horse"
(next to their names I have the titles of the jokes they told me)
lol they are dangerous characters:  I had to run out of the playing hall to have a hearty laugh! Thank God we had Gary Bekker and not a Garvinator style hanging arbiter. I would have been cautioned and then thrown out for making noises.
I had a chance to go for a coffee with the legendary Fludey during a break between rounds. David after stating that women are only good in growing flowers and men vegitables, introduced me in great detail to the marvels of his garden and his impressive production! When I asked him how much time does he spend in his garden, he looked at me enigmatically and said "none"! :eh: :hmm:  then he revealed to me the secret!!! :) I am not giving it to you! :)
An excellent partnership between Vinay and Anurag in the running of the canteen. After they 'd finish their rounds the two talented juniors would run to the canteen and help with serving and looking after the place. Vinay, polite and welcoming undertook the CEO role of promotions and marketing. Anurag took control of the finance and made sure he kept the books in control in a very effective way. Well, they had some disagreements in public but then again, every successful business needs a bit of a kick start! :)
Gerry Hartland showed me his latest photography and drawing masterpieces. I am writing an article about him, as a supplement to the old one, and his latest creative outburst inspired me even further.
Trevor Stanning gave me another impressive sociological lecture about family generational behaviour on the field of finance. That was on Sunday. Three days later his analysis was proved right, accurate and correct to the letter!!! In fact Trevor predicted the latest news about the Packer family! The guy is sharp! Well, you cannot possibly be in a strategic leading position of one of the most successful international companies having dozens of people under your command if you are not sharp!
That's it for the time being!

CONGRATULATIONS IM IGOR GOLDENBERG!!!
You (once again} have made us all proud!!!
I wish you could play more Chess in international tournaments and become a GM as well! Cheers and all the best for the future!!!

PS Greg thanks for the good news!!!! :)

Thanks JAK, but unfortunately it's a bit premature. I still have no information on the progress of IM title application (or even whether ACF made a submission to FIDE).

I guess I could've gotten a bit more out of the game, but I wasn't willing to take the risk, for example, trapping the rook, giving me material advantage, but giving you a lot of compensation. Also, being a pawn up for most of the game, I couldn't really use my advantage at any stage. But anyway, it was a good, tough game, and you deserved to win in the end.

Ah, sorry. I hadn’t read the posts closely enough – was in a hurry - just saw yours late last night and remembered Greg’s post which I thought implied that he had sent off the paperwork (If I’d read JaK’s quote I would have noticed the part where JaK mentions Greg… !)

Does anyone know in which list this tournament will be FIDE rated. I can see that on FIDE website they don't have it as one of the tournaments for the July list, and there is only few days to go. NSW open is there, and the tournament was played at the same time.
